Shelby County Schools Career Technical Education and Community Education are partnering with the Home Builders Association of Alabama and the Alabama Home Builders Foundation to offer a basic residential carpentry certificate program for adults. The eight-week course will meet at the Shelby County College and Career Center from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from September 29-November 17.
“The Alabama Home Builders Foundation is very excited to work with the Shelby County School District to offer a program that will help both those in the community who need a valuable skill and the builders in the area who are in dire need of skilled workers,” said Todd Slyman, Alabama Home Builders Foundation President. “Should this program be successful, we can envision that this is just the beginning of similar programs, by us and other organizations, throughout the state of Alabama. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
The course outline is as follows:
- Week 1 – Basic construction tools; reading a tape measure; importance of safety
- Week 2 – Basic construction site layout; reading blueprints
- Week 3 – Floor framing, wall framing
- Week 4 – Roof and ceiling framing; cutting rafters
- Week 5 – Window and door installation; siding and exterior trim
- Week 6 – Interior trim and finishes
- Week 7 – Stairs
- Week 8 – Wrap-up
“This is the second time for our school district to partner with the Home Builders Association of Alabama and the Home Builders Foundation to offer this course to adults in the community,” said Julie Godfrey, Supervisor of Career Tech Education, College & Career Planning & Community Partnerships. “We had a lot of good feedback from participants who took the first course. We are very excited to be able to offer the course again through this outstanding community partnership.”
Each class meeting will provide time for classroom instruction and theory plus hands-on time in the shop lab. Students completing the course requirements will receive NCCER credits as well as a certificate of completion from the Home Builders Association of Alabama.
The course can accommodate 15 adult students, and preference will be given to Shelby County residents. There is no cost for the course, but students will be required to provide a few tools for hands-on portions of the instruction. Those interested in the course should contact Julie Godfrey at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 682-5253.
