Oak Mountain Middle School Robotics recently won two of the four awards that were given at the Alabama State VEX IQ Robotics Competition, held March 12 at Jacksonville State University. OMMS won for both the teamwork challenge and robot design categories.
OMMS received invitations for five of its teams to compete against 39 other teams at the state competition. Oak Mountain Intermediate School also fielded a team at the state competition and came in 8th place, an impressive showing against mainly middle-school aged teams.
“Going into the finals, we had four teams in the top 10,” said OMMS instructor Sherri Whitehead. “I was blown away at how well our students performed and how well they represented OMMS. Four awards were chosen and OMMS won half of them.”
Winning the two awards qualifies the OMMS team to attend the 2016 VEX Worlds – VEX IQ competition that will be held in Louisville, KY on April 20-23.
“Our teams will be competing against schools from across the US, as well as schools from Japan, China, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Australia, and other countries around the world,” Whitehead said. “This is a huge opportunity to show the world how amazing our students from Shelby County are. This is the first time any Oak Mountain team has been invited to this competition.”
