Montevallo High School Students Participate in Alabama Presidential Mock Election

mhsapelectionpresent1Montevallo High School was one of several schools in Shelby County and across the state of Alabama to participate in the Alabama Presidential Student Mock Election on October 25, which was sponsored by the Alabama State Department of Education.

Students in Mrs. Lee Pastor’s AP Government and Politics class spent the day teaching history classes to all grade levels about the election process, the electoral college, the main presidential candidates and their platforms in order to prepare students for voting. “One great way students can demonstrate their understanding of

mhsapelectionpresent2“One great way students can demonstrate their understanding of material is to teach it to others. This has been a great day for students to learn from their peers about the election process and how to become informed voters, ” noted Pastor.

All MHS students then voted on the AlabamaVotes.gov website for the Mock Election. The whole AP class said they heard that students found the experience very helpful and informative, and there seemed to be a lot of lively political discussion as a result. AP Government student Taylor Sellers stated, “The experience was very eye opening because it showed everyone why it is important to vote.”

mhsjohnmerrillBack in July, while other students were vacationing, the AP Government class attended the Student Mock Election Convention held at the American Village, where they participated in a mock convention and learned about the election process. Students met with Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill in addition to working on their voting campaigns at their schools.
