Inverness Elementary School faculty, staff, and students have participated in several service projects recently. In October, the faculty and staff raised over $900.00 for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation in honor of Alyssa Lee, a kindergartener at the school. Rett Syndrome is a neurological disorder that shows itself in early childhood and affects one out of every 10,000-23,000 female births. More information can be found or donations can be made at http://www.rettsyndrome.org/.
Recently, the physical education department sponsored a canned food drive to support Operation Helping Hands of Shelby County. The students at IES gathered over 1,700 cans! During P.E., students participated in several events using the cans, such as ring toss, canned good scooter racing, and canned good bowling. The cans were then donated for needy families during the Thanksgiving break.
Two more projects are currently underway for the month of December. The IES faculty and staff will be donating a Christmas tree, and students will be making decorations for the VA Veterans Home in Pell City and passing out Christmas cards. In addition, the school will participate in a “Cherish the Children Tree.” IES students will sponsor needy families at the school while by picking up extra gifts during their holiday shopping. Gifts will be distributed to these families before Christmas break. The faculty and students at Inverness Elementary hope you will also consider giving to others during the holiday season.
