Maygen Boaz-Jeffords, a senior softball player at Chelsea High School, has been named the Class 6A and overall winner of the Student Achievement Award from the Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Foundation. Boaz-Jeffords was one of the two overall winners honored at the annual awards banquet held April 14 at the Birmingham Sheraton. Jack Stansell, a football player from Dothan, was the other big winner of the night, taking home honors for Scholar Athlete. A total of 96 regional and state winners were honored at the event.
Boaz-Jeffords was chosen for the Achievement Award for overcoming a rough start to her childhood. She was removed from the care of her birth mother and was placed in foster care. Her father was serving a life sentence plus 40 years for murder in a jail in Florida. Boaz-Jeffords was adopted by her grandparents, who spent a large portion of their retirement savings in order to pay the legal bills necessary to adopt both her and her two sibilings.
In a video posted on AL.com, Principal Wayne Trucks said that Boaz-Jeffords has an incredible work ethic and a postive attitude, despite the struggles she endured as a child.
“Megan is very resposible, especially after everything she has been through,” added Russell McCarthy, head softball coach for Chelsea High School. “She has the right to be a negative person, but she’s not…she is very positive. She is a good influence, again just a good leader.”
“The struggles that I have faced have defintely made me stronger as a person. It makes me strive to be better each day,” said Boaz-Jeffords.
She said softball has always come natural to her and she has always had a love for the game. Her work ethic in softball helped her to be named an all-county player and helped the team win the Class 5A softball championship in 2012.
She will be attending the University of Mobile on a softball scholarship this fall.
