History, intrigue, magic, war, spies, lessons, rain, and rooks: these are the things that abound in this amazing book by Janet Fox.Ā I am not sure what I was expecting from this book but it was not at all what I expected. It was exponentially better.Ā Listening to the audiobook on Overdrive made the experience so much creepier because there was no way to skip ahead and find out what was going to happen.Ā This audio book kept me guessing and it was a joy to listen to (just not in the dark before bed).
āKeep calm and carry on.āĀ Thatās what Katherine Batesonās father told her, and thatās what sheās trying to do:Ā when her father goes off to the war, when her mother sends Kat and her brother and sister away from London to escape the incessant bombing, even when the children arrive at Rookskill Castle, an ancient, crumbling manor on the misty Scottish highlands.
But itās hard to keep calm in the strange castle that seems haunted by ghosts or worse.Ā Whatās making those terrifying screeches and groans at night?Ā Why do the castleās walls seem to have a mind of their own?Ā And why do people seem to mysteriously appear and disappear?
Kat believes she knows the answer: Lady Eleanor, who rules Rookskill Castle, is harboring a Nazi spy. But when her classmates begin to vanish, one by one, Kat must uncover the truth about what the castle actually harborsāand who Lady Eleanor really isābefore it’s too late.
