Students took the Ch. 3 Pretest today and were responsible for finishing it at home. They have a Minerals Voc. Test tomorrow as well as the Minerals Pretest And Chapter Assessment. They will have the Minerals Chapter Test on Thursday.
SI Conversions & Measuring
Students were given a WS with many lines on them. We measured each line mm, then learned the short cut method to converting throughout the Metric System. Students were remind of the SI Conversions Test on tomorrow and be sure to study the prefixes and how to convert.
Density
We introduced the concept of Density today. We reviewed the formula for density and worked 3 practice problems on the board. Students were introduced to the way of determining formulas using the triangle as well as using Algebra. Then, students were given the Density Word Problem WS. It was not finished in class, so it was for homework and due tomorrow. (45 pts) We will finish the chapter tomorrow with one more slide and the Vocabulary Test scheduled for Wednesday and Chapter Test on Thursday. Several students forgot to bring their calculators. They were reminded to bring them each day.
Metric System Conversions
We reviewed the process of writing SI conversion factors. Then, we worked 3 SI Conversions on the board. When, no questions resulted, we began the SI conversions WS. We will have an SI Conversions Test on Thursday. Many students once again, did not bring their calculators as they were instructed to have them each day.
Minerals
We began and completed the Minerals Crossword Puzzle. Class was changed a bit today, due to a Senior Assembly first then a Junior Assembly.
SI Conversion Factors
18 - SI Measurements using a ruler. Then we went over the relationships between the 6 basic prefixes in SI. We drew the millimeter, centimeter, and decimeter on our papers and discussed the relationships between them. Afterwards, we discussed and made conversion factors off all the prefixes in SI.
19 - We reviewed the SI relationships, got the two clues to converting and completed a SI Conversion Factor WS.
Minerals Characteristics
Today, we discussed how mineral are formed, their general characteristics and the various groups of minerals. Students were told to bring a calculator to class to work density problems on Thursday.
SI Prefixes and Numbers
We introduced the SI system of prefixes, symbols and numbers that are used. We used the meter stick to introduce base unit, deci-, centi-, and milli-. We will begin to write conversion factors on tomorrow. Students will continue to need their calculators each day.
Types of Bonds
We continued talking about the 3 major types of bonds (ionic, covalent, metallic), their characteristics and how to differentiate among them. We were introduced to the definition of minerals and how they are identified.
Density Word Problems
We discussed what Density actually tells you. Then we worked 3 sample problems for Density. After working the practice problems, students were given a Density Word Problem worksheet to complete in class. Several did not have their calculators as they were told to have. They must have their calculators each day. It's vital...
