March 12 Announcements

Monday, March 18th, all 7th & 8th grade students will be traveling to the high school to see all of the Oak Mountain show choirs perform. Students will be off OMMS campus at OMHS from approximately 8:00-11:30. Please plan ahead when scheduling appointments or for checking in/out.

On Saturday March 16th 2019, there will be an arts and crafts fair at the Indian Springs Village Town Hall located at 2635 Cahaba Valley Road from 9am to 6pm. Items to be sold at the arts and crafts fair will be homemade from Birmingham area artists. Five percent (5%) of the proceeds from the event will be donated to our Oak Mountain Schools to support our Chromebook project. Please mark your calendars for March 16th 2019 and come out to support our local artists and our Chromebook project.

Registration for the 2019 Oak Mountain Color Run to be held on March 16th is open! Please help us reach our goal this year of raising $40,000 for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center! This run was started 6 years ago by two high school students at Oak Mountain High School to honor their grandparents who were impacted by cancer. The race is still hosted by the Oak Mountain High School Student Government Association. Please sign up for the 5k or 1 Mile Fun Run today! Registration, information, and pictures can be found at www.oakmountaincolorrun.com 

Please remember when your student is absent you have three (3) school days from the time that he returns to send in a written excuse.  Please also remember to include your student’s full name, written legibly, in order for it to be correctly recorded to your student.  If a student needs to be absent and it is known in advance, please turn in a pre-planned absence form 10 days prior to the absence for approval.  To help facilitate getting absentee excuses in, we have added lock boxes on the 7th & 8th grade halls. These are secure boxes, close to the students’ core classes, making it easier than ever for the students to get their excuses turned in within the 3-day window. Please encourage your students to locate them and use them.

OMHS Theater Presents, Arsenic and Old Lace, March 15th at 7:00 pm, March 16th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.  Tickets are $10 at door or online.  (flyer attached)

Changes in bus transportation will only be approved for emergency purposes.  Please send in transportation notes, including the reason for the change, 24 hours in advance.

Please join Academic Partners at our next meeting Thursday, March 14 at 8:15.  We will be discussing next years prepackaged school supply sale and elections for the 2019-2020 school year.

6th and 7th graders, if you are interested in being on the 2019-2020 Broadcast Team, please pick up an application from Mrs. Salmon in room D-4. Applications are due March 22, 2019.

Dancers are reminded that our first practice is at 3:15 today in the cafeteria.

Students it is very important that you not leave your belongings in the hallways. Sports bags, electronic devices, backpacks, etc. Please use your lockers or get permission from a sports coach to leave your bags in their classroom. Items should never be left in the hallway.

Students who placed a yearbook on layaway are reminded your final payment of $20.00 is due by the end of April. Make payable to OMMS, and include student’s name on payment.

How would you like to see Rome, Athens, and cruise the Greek Isles? Join us in June of 2020 as we travel the world. There will be a parent meeting March 21st at North Shelby Library. All are welcome, OMMS students, friends, and family. Contact Mr. Parker with questions.

New for you!! There are brand new boxes for you to drop off your absentee excuses making it easier than ever for you to get your notes in on time. If you have a doctor’s note or a parent note explaining why you were absent, you can now drop it off in the new boxes on B, C, & D Halls. Look for the boxes with the bright green sign on the wall at the junction of B-hall and G-hall, C-Hall and G-Hall, and D-Hall and B-Hall (right across from Mrs. Kennedy’s room). Of course there is still a tray in the front office too. This should help you get your notes in on time. Try them out! Let us know what you think!

Eagle Ambassadors should come in this week to D-5 in the morning to make your poster for the soccer project.

Students if you have old soccer gear – cleats, jerseys, socks, etc. please bring to school starting next week for a soccer drive for Cambodian children. There will be an area for collection on the lunchroom stage.

Current Yearbook Staff Members, remember you are invited to stay after school tomorrow. There will be treats.

SPORTS NEWS GO EAGLES!!!!

Tennis players should check in for advisory and then dismiss to the gym to change for their match today. Good luck against Hewitt!

Good luck to our Golf team in the Berry Invitational today.

Track team should be dismissed today at 2:30 to change. Students should meet at the back of the gym and be ready to leave at 2:45! Good luck at Spain Park!

Spring football practices will take place April 29-May 2, May 6-9, and May 13-14. Equipment fitting will take place April 24 during PE classes and all student-athletes participating in spring football are required to attend equipment fitting. The deadline to sign up for spring football is April 10 which includes completing all AHSAA requirements on DragonFly Max. There will be a mandatory for participation parent meeting on Thursday, April 11th at 5:30pm in the cafeteria. Sign up link will be shared on the parent e-news and OMMS website announcements.

If your student-athlete is planning on participating in spring football, you will need to complete AHSAA eligibility requirements via DragonFly Max. All physicals must be on the Revised 2018 Form 5 (attached on parent e-news and OMMS website under announcements) as the 2013 Form expires in April. Also, when completing DragonFly Max, do not click ‘My School Will Complete This Requirement’. If your student-athlete is in 6th grade, you will select 7th Grade Football and if your student-athlete is in 7th grade, you will select 8th Grade Football. Track practice this afternoon is cancelled. Please remind Track team students to bring uniforms tomorrow for their meet at Spain Park. They need to be excused from class at 2:30 to change and meet Coach Hackbarth and I at the back of the gym by 2:40; we leave at 2:45!!

Baseball will practice today until 4:15.

March 7 Announcements

The OMHS Girls Soccer teams are set to play in Auburn this Friday, March 8th. In light of the Lee County tornadoes and the tragic loss of life and property, the JV and Varsity teams will be raising money to donate to disaster relief through the Church of the Highlands. With the help of our amazing OM community, these games will mean a whole lot more as both school districts come together to make a difference, as the Auburn Soccer programs are also taking donations. Please consider being part of this effort and make your checks payable to: Church of the Highlands, noting in the memo – Lee County Disaster Relief. Collections will run through today and can be dropped off to our amazing front office staff at OMHS and OMMS.

March 6 Announcements

Congratulations to the following Track Athletes: Davion F placed 4th in the 400 meter dash (1:00) and also placed 7th in the 100 meter dash (12:72), Emarie Mc. placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash (13:51), Bryce C. placed in the top 10 in the 800 meter dash (2:31), Gracie M. placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash (31:09), Trinity A. placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash (31:14), Taylor Mc. and Samantha B. placed in the top 10 in the 200 meter dash.

Congratulations to our tennis team in their win over Bumpus yesterday 5-4.

Good luck to our softball team as they play at Simmons today.

Lee County Disaster Relief Donations

The OMHS Girls Soccer teams are set to play in Auburn this Friday, March 8th. In light of the Lee County tornadoes and the tragic loss of life and property, the JV and Varsity teams in both OM and Auburn high schools and middle schools will be raising money to donate to disaster relief through the Church of the Highlands. With the help of our amazing OM community, these games will mean a whole lot more as our two school districts come together to make a difference. Consider being part of this effort and make your checks payable to: Church of the Highlands, noting in the memo – Lee County Disaster Relief. Collections will run through Thursday and can be dropped off to the fab front office staff at OMHS and OMMS.

March 5 Announcements

Please remember when your student is absent you have three (3) school days from the time that he returns to send in a written excuse.  Please also remember to include your student’s full name, written legibly, in order for it to be correctly recorded to your student.  If a student needs to be absent and it is known in advance, please turn in a pre-planned absence form 10 days prior to the absence for approval.

Changes in bus transportation will only be approved for emergency purposes.  Please send in transportation notes, including the reason for the change, 24 hours in advance.

Book Olympiad team members will meet 7th period in C4 today. Check in with advisory teacher for attendance first. There is no practice.

Students attending Write in the Middle Conference will meet in C4 with Mrs. Hutchings at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 7.

8th grade panoramic picture today during advisory. Students need to report to the gym immediately following 3rd period.

OMHS dance team, majorette line and color guard, interest meeting Thursday, March 7th, at 6pm in the OMHS bandroom. Bring a parent to the meeting. Tryouts will be the week of April 1-5th. For more information, please email Mrs. DiPiazza, Mr. Feldman or Mrs. Sheffield at the high school or check our instagram accounts for updates and applications.

Students it is very important that you not leave your belongings in the hallways. Sports bags, electronic devices, backpacks, etc. Please use your lockers or get permission from a sports coach to leave your bags in their classroom. Items should never be left in the hallway.

Art aide applications are available now to print from Mr. Cecil’s blog: https://podcasts.shelbyed.k12.al.us/acecil/?p=110&preview=true If you are unable to print the form please contact Mr. Cecil for a copy. Applications are due on or before March 7th.

Students who placed a yearbook on layaway are reminded your final payment of $20.00 is due by the end of April. Make payable to OMMS, and include student’s name on payment.

How would you like to see Rome, Athens, and cruise the Greek Isles? Join us in June of 2020 as we travel the world. There will be a parent meeting March 21st at North Shelby Library. All are welcome, OMMS students, friends, and family. Contact Mr. Parker with questions.

Winterguard girls have yearbook picture retakes right after school tomorrow. Students should check in with their advisory teacher and dismiss at 2:35 to get ready and report to the gym.

6th and 7th graders, if you are interested in being on the 2019-2020 Yearbook Staff, please pick up an application from Mrs. Acton or Mrs. Graham. Applications are due March 14th.

SPORTS NEWS GO EAGLES!!!!

Good luck to our tennis team at their match against Bumpus. Tennis students need to check in with their advisory teacher and then dismiss to the gym to change.

Good luck to our baseball team as they play Homewood at OMHS.

Good luck to our track team at their first meet at Hoover. Track students please check in with your advisory teachers and immediately change. We will meet at the back of the gym and are leaving at 2:45. **8th graders – If you want to be in the 8th grade picture, change first and meet us as soon as you can!!

On Thursday, Golf team members should report to the front office after 6th hour for dismissal to Inverness.

Athletic Booster Meeting is THIS Sunday, March 10th, 7-8pm at the Heardmont Senior Center. Help us make a difference in OMMS Athletics by getting involved and learning how you can help your student become more involved in athletics, meet our guest coach, and bring a friend!

Spring Football: If your student-athlete is planning on participating in spring football (dates TBD), you will need to complete AHSAA eligibility requirements via DragonFly Max. Instruction sheet will be included on the parent e-news and OMMS website announcements section). All physicals must be on the Revised 2018 Form 5 (attached on parent e-news and OMMS website under announcements) as the 2013 Form expires in April. Also, when completing DragonFly Max, do not click ‘My School Will Complete This Requirement’. If your student-athlete is in 6th grade, you will select 7th Grade Football and if your student-athlete is in 7th grade, you will select 8th Grade Football. Football sign-ups will take place at a time to be determined, but completing eligibility requirements now will help in your student-athlete being ready to begin spring practice on time.
