OMMS Updates from Dr. Larry Haynes

Dear Parents:

Each year we plan events to encourage and support our students in a variety of areas from quarterly Character Assemblies with motivational speakers to the eighth grade report card conferences that include the opportunity for me to discuss with students the importance of setting goals, preparing for high school while providing them the opportunity to review their grades and goals with adult mentors. Additional events involve the counselors visiting classrooms to discuss topics such as academic planning, career exploration, goal setting, bullying prevention, and substance abuse prevention.  On occasion, the above topics are discussed in school assemblies.  With regard to new legislation from the state, please read the information below, as well as the examples included in the link.  If you wish for your child to participate in these events this school year, please click the “yes” box.  If you do not, a “no” box is provided as well.

The USDA waivers that allowed students to eat at no cost for the last two years has expired.  Students must have an approved meal benefit application to qualify for meal benefits.  If you think you may qualify for meal benefits please take a moment to complete the meal benefit application online. Many grants and programs that may help students and families are based on the meal benefit application.

A Letter From Dr. Haynes

Dear OMMS Parents and Students:

It has been brought to my attention that there are questions regarding when students will be receiving their class schedules for the 2022-2023 school year.

To provide clarification regarding class schedules, our counselors are still working on perfecting individual student schedules. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide 7th and 8th grade students with their schedules prior to the first days of school on August 11th and 12th.  At this time we are planning to provide schedules to 6th grade students who are able to attend Eagle Induction on August 10th.  For the 6th grade students unable to attend Eagle Induction, we will have their schedules ready for them on their first day of school.

Please refer to the listserv message I sent on July 26th (included below) for further clarification.  Thank you for your patience.

Listserv Message from July 26th

Dear OMMS Parents:

It has been brought to our attention that students have been able to view a 2022-2023 class schedule via Flocabulary.

I don’t want to promote false hopes among students, but our class schedules are not complete.  At this time the students are seeing a pseudo schedule that was generated by PowerSchool, not their actual completed class schedules.

Because we offer a variety of core classes, specialized elective courses, and common instructional planning time for our subject area teachers, all final class schedules have to be generated by hand, one student at a time.  In addition to the other items noted above, OMMS is returning to the highly acclaimed middle school practice of teaming our students at all grade levels.  Therefore, to the best of our ability, students will be assigned to Red, White, or Blue teams for the coming year.

We are excited about the opportunity to return to teaming, but please keep in mind that we will still be working on balancing schedules until the day before students return to school.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we prepare for an amazing school year in 2022-2023.

Sincerely,

Larry Haynes, Ed. D
