October 14th Announcements

General Information

OMMS Announcements will be shared on Tuesdays and Fridays only from this point, unless there is special information to share.

Students that ride bus 22-09 will ride bus 09-63 at dismissal today.

Students that ride bus 13-39 will report to C-west hallway today at dismissal.

Attention 7th and 8th Grade Girls and Parents/Guardians:  Are you interested in careers in STEM fields? Would you like to hear more about STEM jobs? Would you like to hear from women that currently have STEM jobs in the Birmingham area?  If this sounds like something that interests you, please see the flyer below for “Go Red for Women: STEM Goes RED” for more information. This is a great opportunity for OMMS girls interested in this field of work. Students interested must be in good academic and behavior standing. Washington DC 2023 ~ February 16 – 20, 2023

Final deadline is Friday, October 14th or when the spaces are filled.  If you are a 7th or 8th grader interested in attending the DC Trip –> read this carefully 2023 OMMS Washington DC Trip Information, follow the steps on page 6, and register as soon as possible. Email Mrs. Kennedy if you have any questions at jkennedy@shelbyed.org.

Phase 1 canned food drive will end on Wednesday, October 19th. The competition is heating up so don’t miss out on this great cause!  Drop your cans off with your science teacher!

NJHS students please check your school email for an important message from Mr. Burdett regarding membership dues and Toys for Tots shopping.

JUNA will meet Monday after school until 4:30pm.

Phase 1 will deliver canned goods to Oak Mountain Missions next Thursday, October 20th. Students will stay after school that day, but parents will drive from OMMS to Oak Mountain Missions. October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and Shelby County Schools is excited to celebrate and raise awareness for our students with dyslexia.  Please see the attached newsletter for more information.

The Oak Mountain Girls Basketball League is now Open.  Registration for girls in the 2nd-6th grades is now open through our website www.omgb.org.    Please email Coach Noel if you have any questions at jnoel@shelbyed.org  Early registration coast:  $155; After October 23th cost is $165; Evaluation/Placement Date: October 24, 2022 at OMMS 7:00-8:00pm 2nd-4th graders; 8:00-9:00pm 5th-6th graders.   Practices will begin November 1st, mainly held on Tuesdays.  Our first game will be Saturday, November 12th.

Any student who reads 5 books by Friday, Oct. 28th and turns in their form will receive free admission to a home game of their choice! Come get a flyer from the library or print the flyer, then complete the challenge, and turn it in to the library (Mrs. Howton or Mrs. McCaleb) by Friday, Oct. 28th!

Any 7th & 8th grade student interested in attending the Washington DC trip from Thursday, February 16 – Monday, February 20, 2023.  Read carefully the following details on 2023 OMMS Washington DC Trip Info!  Deadline to register is Monday, October 3rd. Email Mrs. Kennedy at jkennedy@shelbyed.org with any questions.  Normally, this is a 7th grade trip.  We are offering it to 7th & 8th grade students this year only (Feb 2023) due to not going on the trip last year.  Next year (Feb 2024), we will only offer it to 7th grade students.

Birmingham-Southern Men’s Basketball team is offering free admission to a home game for the entire family! Any student who reads 5 books by Friday, Oct. 28th and turns in their form will receive free admission to a home game of their choice! Come get a flyer from the library or print the flyer, then complete the challenge, and turn it in to the library (Mrs. Howton or Mrs. McCaleb) by Friday, Oct. 28th!

6th Grade Students and Parents/Guardians:  Next week the Counseling Department is hosting Sandra Dozier, with BridgeWays, to present lessons on the relationship between interests/personalities and future career options.  These lessons will take place during Social Studies:  Wednesday, October 5th- Mrs. Higginbotham’s Classes; Thursday, October 6th- Mr. Wood’s Classes; Friday, October 7th- Ms. Zimmer’s Classes

Attention 8th graders: Our High Flight field trip is coming up!  The entire 8th grade will attend this instructional field trip. Read the attached letter for details about time, place, activities, and fee via the parent listserv or OMMS website. The deadline for the fee is Friday 9/30.

Phase 1 Community Service club is now accepting applications for all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This group meets 1-2 Thursdays per month and works with organizations like Oak Mountain Missions, Backpack Buddies, and local nursing homes to make our community better!
