Preparing to Reopen at OMMS

Dear OMMS Parents and Families:

As a follow-up to Dr. Brooks’ message from earlier this morning, The OMMS faculty and staff are excited about the opportunity to return to in-person learning on Monday (4/19).
I extend thanks to the team of engineers, architects, electricians, Central Office leaders, and  representatives from the State Department of Education who have put in a great deal of time to assess damages, begin the clean-up and repair process, and thoroughly assure the building is safe and ready to reopen.

As I have shared in previous messages, our aim has always been to get our students back to school as soon as reasonably possible.  A great deal of work has been done over the last three weeks to prepare the building for re-occupancy.  Some classrooms have been relocated for the remainder of the school year, but we are fortunate to have additional classrooms available for all teachers and students.  Referencing Dr. Brooks’ message, we had a good number of buses that were damaged as a result of the flying debris from the F-3 tornado.  The transportation department has been working diligently to make repairs over the last three weeks.

Unfortunately,  the OMMS bus fleet includes multiple makes and models of school buses, which makes it challenging to receive all necessary replacement parts, primarily windows and mirrors, in a timely manner.  While some buses are ready to resume routes, others are still awaiting parts.  The transportation office will send a detailed message in the coming days regarding routes that will not be running.  We apologize for any inconvenience regarding bus transportation.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with our families who have been affected by the tornado.  I continue to be both humbled and grateful for the outpouring of encouragement and support from the parents, churches, schools, and members of our community.

We will provide information of any classroom relocations in addition to other pertinent information when students arrive at school on Monday.  Thanks again for your outpouring of support and encouragement throughout this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Larry Haynes, Ed. D
Principal

Update from OMMS

Dear OMMS Parents and Guardians:

I hope everything is going well on the home front for our students and families.

While students and teachers progress with e-learning, a great deal of work is taking place throughout the building and campus.  The construction crew is making impressive progress on the portions of the building that suffered damage from the tornado.  We hope to have much more information to share once we receive the latest status of the building construction and clean-up effort in the near future.

Meanwhile, we will continue moving forward.  It is not the same around the building when students, teachers, and staff are not in classrooms and hallways, especially in April.  Until we can bring everyone back together for in-person learning, keep encouraging your sons and daughters to complete assignments and email or take part in a Google Meet with their teachers if they need assistance or have questions. Also, please do not hesitate to email the grade level counselors or any of us on the administrative team if we can be of assistance.

Thank you for your patience and continuous encouragement throughout the campus renewal and e-learning process.  I never cease to be amazed at the many things our students and families are doing to provide support to those affected by the tornado.  On the school front, I hope to have more detailed information to share in the coming days.

Sincerely,
Larry Haynes, Ed. D
Principal

Friday April 2nd Update from OMMS

Dear OMMS Parents and Families:
As we near the end of day 5 of e-learning, I continue to be both thankful and amazed at the number of groups who continue to reach out to us desiring to assist our teachers and staff in addition to helping clean and restore our campuses.  As I shared in my previous message, once we receive clearance from Alabama Power, Shelby County, and Alabama State Department of Education officials, we will be in touch with these groups to schedule clean-up days.  Here is the latest information I can share with you as the damage assessment process continues at OMMS.

As OMES prepares to welcome students back to the school on Monday, a team of engineers, architects, electricians, and Central Office leaders continue to inspect the OMMS buildings and grounds, especially the exterior and interior walls throughout the building and on the roof.  What they have learned so far is that the damage is more extensive than originally thought.  Meanwhile, additional crews have been working to clean up the areas most affected and secure wind damaged doors and windows.  Once the assessment is complete, our district leaders will come up with the absolute best plan to address the needs of our students.  With that said, we will continue with e-learning until further notice.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with our families who have been affected by the tornado.  I continue to be uplifted by the actions taken by multitudes of people who are contributing their time, talents, and financial support towards putting lives back together.

As e-learning continues, please do not hesitate to email me, our grade level counselors, and grade level assistant principals to make us aware of any needs for our students.  In addition, please call the front office (205-682-5210) if you have questions or need immediate assistance.  I have included the names and email addresses for the assistant principals and counselors below:

Thank you again for the encouragement and kind words so many of you have shared throughout these challenging times.  We wish each of you a Happy Easter!

Sincerely,
Larry Haynes, Ed. D
Principal
