Montevallo Schools Receive Grants for Choral Programs

Montevallo Middle and Montevallo High schools will both benefit from a $2,500 grant from the Alabama Power Foundation’s Power to Play Arts program.

Each school will receive a $2,500 grant to support their choral programs, according to Allison “Cissy” Johnson who serves as the choral director at both schools. While the specifics of how the grants will be used at each school is still being determined by Johnson and school administrators, part of the money will go toward scholarships for students who need financial assistance in order to participate in choral programs.

“Our students are often times unable to participate in optional honor choirs and pay fees due to their financial constraints,” Johnson said. “I want our students to have access to the opportunities students in more affluent schools have. Whether that is to pay a choir fee, purchase a uniform, or attend an honor choir – I want them to have the opportunity.”

In addition to the grant, Montevallo Middle School choral students now also have the added blessing of a George Steck Grand Piano that was recently donated to the program. The only charge to the school for the beautiful piano was the delivery fee.
