yes, sixth grade, you MUST blog extra on labor day

i mean, that’s where the day got it’s name in the first place, right??? this evil teacher, mr. mayfield, made his students labor so hard, day after day after day, that a special day was created to honor everyone’s attempt to read a billion books a week – and write responses that were never exactly creative enough to meet his high demands (b/c he was creatively brilliant – i mean, a superhero with a binder battling a tragedy bear??? you just can’t make this stuff up people…)

“rickey and robinson” – book on the relationship between jackie robinson and the GM that signed up to break baseball’s color barrier – amazing as it is, the author knew both guys – i just honestly assumed everyone was dead from that situation that could add light on the subject – so it was a very good read – regardless of your interest in baseball, robinson is a great biography read

“you might have known me…” – biography on phil hartman(n) – he did SNL – he did tv – he was on peewee’s playhouse – he voiced troy mcclure on the simpsons – really funny/creative guy to read about – his end was tragic

“buffy the vampire slayer: season eight, volume 1” – okay, i don’t think i have any audience members out there, but those of you that regularly read comics/graphic novels – mega props – i was thoroughly lost and confused trying to do so – lots more to them than i ever figured – i definitely got a lot out of it

remember, all day reading and writing on labor day or else you fail sixth grade!!!

  1. Dave did not want to be first today! He is pretending he did not read today’s post so that he doesn’t have to read and blog all day tomorrow. He is planning to feign ignorance instead. πŸ™‚

  2. I’m certain it’s because of the smiley emoticon. πŸ™‚

Do parents know how to use the emoticons???

  3. lol nice Mayfield I can get one more day of no school then Tuesday is gonna feel like a monday

  4. a parent’s world is so full of “blah”ness, i don’t think they could know and appreciate emoticons quite like an adolescent could…

i’m reading a choose your own adventure book about buffy – except i keep dying – i’m the absolute world’s worst at such books…

  5. Mayfield, have you heard of a new movie called “When the Game Stands Tall?”

It’s apparently a brand new Christian movie that came out August 22. We’re going to see it after church.

  6. detective – yes, sports illustrated even had a list a week ago about the movie – but just about cameo NFL appearances – not whether it was good or bad though

in a related note, billy’s beloved vanderbilt season so far wouldn’t classify as Christian – it would be horror:)

and in another related note to the related note, my own horror TV show watching is going well – i have buffy into season 3 – even if i keep killing her in the book – okay, like the third try, i got all the way to the epilogue – cleverly hidden at like page 43 – the trick was that buffy always tied at the ending pages – i thought they mixed that up in the classic “choose your own adventure” books

  7. lol I have been having a merlin marathon season 3 already I bet the detective has been watching it to

Willow had been walking to Dell’s office every day and got tired of that so she had a plan…
She went on a site that you could order a taxi and it would pick you up where you told it to, she had it pick her up on the corner when she got out of school. She was nervous! But the taxi did arive on time, and when the man got there she stuck her head inside the car and asked for his paper work./
When she got in the car the mexican started talking to someone on his phone, but he did not know that Willow spoke fluent spanish… The man said, “At first I think i’m picking up some kind of little person going to the air port-because she had luggage. But then i get closer and i see it is just a little girl. I’m telling you, man, it’s some kind of under cover sting operation. She asked for my paperwork, Man! I would have steped on the gas and sped off, but she was leaning in through the window! This is harsh, my friend. If a kid can ambush you outside of a middle school, What is next!?!”

Willow thought/ 2 things she had never been in a taxi before nor had she EVER been in a car with a stranger before, she thought suddenly a explorer and a risk-taker. She felt good suddenly a smile spred accors her face. She was happy because she was on her way to see a new friend that she had made… When she arived she got out of the car and said, “Never let anyone tell you, you cant do it” By the expression on the mans face she guessed he thought that she was talking to him. As she came sround the corner she saw Mai sitting on the curb. When she walked up to her she SAID..
    That is all for today!

  10. πŸ™‚ i doubt this will work but i put a smiley at the beginning.

Tuesday: sherlock is looking around the crimes scene and finds all the clues he=e needs to catch the murder.(there are several beads of sweat running down my face because i listened to my book while playing basketball.)
Sherlock schedules a private meeting with the murderer and makes him tell hem the whole story and Sherlock writes all the facts down and makes him signed it so the mans son will not get hanged and he makes sure he has watson for a witness.

  11. sorry for all you folks out there that were wondering where i was today…

i had to get my bottom set of braces. fun, right?

they hurt like CRAZY. you wouldn’t believe how sore and strange it feels afterwords. i keep popping ibuprofen pills in my mouth every 4 hours…

anyways, i’m still reading ALLEGIANT. i didn’t get much reading done over the weekend, tho. i did read some. just not as much as i would have liked. πŸ™

i was too busy at the AUBURN game with my dad. it rained four times, not counting the huge game delay b/c of lightning. it was fun anyways. πŸ™‚

so, i’m at the part in ALLEGIANT where they just got to this secret gov’t. office building that was once an old airport. this guy (can’t remember his name) comes out and starts talking about the “United States of America”.

Tris, Tobias, Cara, and everyone else with them has NO IDEA WHAT THE UNITED STATES ARE.

c’mon, you LIVE in it, people.

my point being, the factions are so secluded, that no one knows that they’re part of a larger landform with thousands more other living beings on it. i think that’s pretty hilarious if you ask me.

    here’s my creative.

    “Faith”
    by Blue

The definition of faith is misused.
    Faith means knowing or believing
Even if your eyes can’t meet it.
    Faith means just being
Being, even if you might be wrong.
    Faith means
    Making mistakes
    But taking them as lessons
    And knowing
    You’ll be better.
    Next time.
There’s not always going to be a next time,
    But,
    Oh well.
Faith is the word so many use
    But know so little about.
    ~
well, that’s it for this week. i’m really excited about next friday, mr. maf!

  16. “There’s another name for it. We’ll have an exact copy. A clone.” (Haddix 2005)
    ^
When i first read this i wanted to talk about cloning but then i starting thinking and now i decided i wanted to talk about something else. How could someone decide to make a clone of an about-to-be-dead loved one? I realize if you want to hold on to someone then if you could clone them and keep them longer then you probably would. but then when you think about it, you wouldn’t be keeping them, you’d be keeping your memory of them. Cloning would only keep the body instead of the brain. You would just every time you look at them you would be reminded of the person you’re trying to replace but the person who’s reminding you of them isn’t them.

“Need a ride? It looks like Bethany banged up her leg pretty badly” (Haddix 2005)
    ^
I feel like this is the start of another conflict, because since Bethany now knows shes a clone you could just end the story there. But if some awkward person who you don’t know knows your name and comes up in a creepy van and tries to “help” you then you know he’s going to come back at some time and be in the story.

  17. Line

    ” I have good news”
    Commentary

I said this line because Harry was going to live. Cake said that Harry was ok and that he was awake and asleep it was on and off. Cake also wants fellow to go to church with her because of Harry. Cake give fellow a fruit shaped paper and has to come up with some of his favorite bible verses. Harry got hit in the face with a base ball and had broken his nose. He also had a couple of cracks in his cheeks but cake said he was going to be ok if he was still awake and doing good

    Line

” we walked over to Brians house”

    Commentary

I chose this line because earlier he agreed to go to Brian’s house for a bible study with cake. Right after supper cake knocked and his door and they headed that way. On the way there they were talking about what they had put down on their peice of fruit. But the author didn’t say what they were talking about. Once they went inside about 6 other people had already gotton there. Brian’s dad was the teacher. His mom was trying to panic putting plates of cookies on the table but she ran out and ran to the kitchen to get more. ” shhhh” they started with the lesson

One day late in the afternoon Alexa was at the house all by herself and she heard a noise downstairs like something was down tere. So she looked around and found her keys and quietly went down the stairs. After she was there she heard it again she hid for about an hour. She quietly came out and Wales to the kitchen. She heard it one more time went in there and it was her kitty

  18. “Harry Potter”;Creative:What would would happen if Harry got…

  19. Im reading sword bearer and im to the part where they just escaped into a gateway and are walking down a road but the things are still coming after them the road is very magical and theirs a magical beam sort of like a superhighway for people who can use magic. They get on it with their third eye which was how they saw it in the first place becuase regular eyes cant see magic. They hop on and it sends them flying down to the next gate they try to open it but it wont budge and lightning bolts come down on them. The 3 blooded prince touches all the letters and starts singing with the notes they make and he is able to open it and save his friends for a little but longer from the dark lord.

  20. Ok I’ll do my two creative’s and half of the normal dialectal journal work for this short week – I haven’t really had the time to read anything, because my schedule had been so packed and with these periods havnt been helping me get any work done in lunch or advisory. Here’s my fully creative poem.

    Rain

    Sprinkling from the sky
Little drops of relief for crops, quenched
Torture for the sports teams, sitting in shelter, overflowing with anticipation
The drops posing for the photographers window-shot of the outside world
God sending down His creation, which is beautiful
As beautiful as th green grass that grows form the thirty minutes of
    Rain

  21. Line:
    Brandon Roberts…..

    Commentary:

Brandon Roberts is mentioned a ton in the Dork Diares series. He is the most popular guy at winchester country day middle school. Nikki Maxwell really likes brandon as well as every other girl at WCD. If he comes over to her and they start talking she makes it really awkward.
There is a dance coming up at WCD, and mackenzie hollister

  22. Who in the world was that?!?

    …..

Oh, now i know it’s DaveK, since he’s a realy spamy guy.

  23. Now, where were we? Oh yes, at the forest, right? Right. So let’s get down to business, shall we?

    (:

So Rusty becomes freinds with Graypaw when to other cats from Thunderclan come: the clan leader, Bluestar, and the clan deputy,Tigerclaw. Bluestar asks Rusty to join the clan in the morning, and he says maybe. the next morning, he steps out ofhis owners house to the same spot he was yesterday to see Graypaw. Graypaw asks him to come, and with some doubt in his mind, he says yes. Rusty comes with him to the clan to show him around, and at the end of the day, he gets a new name from Bluestar and Starclan (cat hevan):
    Firestar, for his flame-colored pelt

Sorry about the frowny face. I didn’t mean that to be there.

  24. Tom groaned louder, and fancied that he began to feel pain in the toe.(Twain,1988)
Tom really must hate Mondays because he is doing everything in his power to try and stay home.

“Oh, Aunt Polly, come! Tom’s dying!”(Twain,1988)
Aunt Polly figured out tom was faking it within seconds of tom saying his toe hurts,if tom wouldn’t of said that he could have been home

    “Hello, Huckleberry!”(Twain,1988)
Tom was able to talk to one of the coolest characters within this book,he doesn’t have to do anything that anybody tells him and he can swim wherever he likes

“I STOPPED TO TALK WITH HUCKLEBERRY FINN!”
Tom really has it bad, the school master doesn’t believe him and thinks hes lying about talking to him.

In addition to his corporal punishment, he’s “forced” to sit with the girls. Tom knew this would happen, and that the only seat left open was right next to Judge Thatcher’s daughter.Tom flirts with her and insist that she accept his gift of a peach. Having gotten her interest, he shows Becky the masterpiece he’s drawn on his slate – a terrible picture of a house and some stick figures.

  25. My dialectacal journal is with an intresting series I had been told of and a qoute inside of the fourth book that I find incredibley motivational. It’s also stated by my favorite character, Mr. Lantern Crepsley, from “Cirque Du Freak” by Darren Shan.

Qoute is “Life is a challenge and only those who rise to the challenge truely know what it means to live.”

I do believe that Mr. Mayfield could say he’s lived, not only because he’s run marathons (including Boston), but because he’s over come and conqoured his teachings of the 6th graders this year. A challenge for only the bravest.

  26. Line:
And endings are allways the beginnings of something else…
    ——————–
    What it means:
It means that when maybe something bad happens then it could be the start of something else that is good and new! So REMIND your self if SOMEONE is RUDE then something GOOD might turn out OF it…. You NEVER no! But it is only saying that whenever something ends SOMETHING ELSE begins!

  27. Creative poem

    12th Man
    The man on the field,
    louder than all other.
    The strongest,
    the encourager.
    The 12th man.
    Not one man,
    but 100,000 of them.
    Not seen on the field,
    but heard in your ears.
    The 12th man.
    There at your worst,
    louder at your best.
The 12th man is the very best! πŸ™‚

  28. This is from an article i read in SI Kids on Marcus Mariota(Oregon QB).

“If Marcus is going to play, he should make sure to have fun.”

The game of football or in general is more about other stuff than the actual sport. Everyone wants to raise fists and win at all cost in sports sometimes. It is awesome to be competitive, but that is not the full meaning of sports. They are made to have fun using your talents on a football field. One thing Coach Smith always tells us is that this is building you into a man and i would do anything to get this time back and to be able to play football again. Have fun and enjoy sports and use them for other things than winning

  29. I am reading sword bearer and im to the part where the boy accepts his fate as a prince and he is trying to contact his parents and he does and he gets his mom and pulls her through the portal he made to contact her but she is knocked unconscious by a wizard.

  30. Like Will, my schedule has been packed as well unfortunately. I’ll do a creative and do a dialectical journal on an interview I read.

Interview: These Kids Grew Up with the Woods as Their Only Classroom

Line: β€œ…learning is as natural as breathing.”
Commentary: This line grasped my attention because the man being interviewed is the father of the two kids that have a different type of homeschooling. Instead of structured curriculum, they have what’s commonly known as unschooling. The line is just significant in its figurative language and its truthfulness.

Line: “Unschooling isn’t merely an educational choice. It’s a lifestyle choice.”
Commentary: Another line by the father of the two kids. This line is interesting because it’s a unique way to explain that the way he’s teaching his kids. The word lifestyle indicates that he’s not doing it for their education, but because he believes that it’s a very useful lifestyle.

    Creative:

    Blind

    Blind
I thought I knew what I was seeing
    I thought everyone was wrong
I thought I knew what was going on,
But I was just blind all along
    Blind

    Blind
Now that the veil’s been lifted,
I know what I must do
    I must leave the source,
and I believe that is you.

    Farewell blog

  31. Alright I got a new book at the library today, and I found some interesting sentences to comment on for my dialectal journals.

    Line:
“Mrs. Rothman’s multimillionare husband had fallen to his death from a seventeenth-story window. It had happened just two days after his marriage to her.”

    Response:
To set the scene, Julia Rothman is a successful criminal, and is in an organization known to every police agency, Scorpia. When I read this, knew that maybe Horowitz – the author of the book, “Scorpia” – placed this there as an underlying detail to Rothman’s character. These words capture my eye, in this particular sentence, and situation: ‘multimillionare’, ‘death’, ‘two days after…marriage’. Leook over those again. I’m sorry for being the person that assumes that Mr. Rothman didn’t ‘fall’ from the seventeenth. You know that joke people say when they swerve towards you in the parking lot – something about collecting insurance money, etc. – well I think Mrs. Rothman went of the deep end and went for just that. Ive read this book before, and I’ll have a new way to view Mrs. Rothman after noticing this detail that I missed last time.

Since that was way longer that anticipated, I’ll count that as two. Here’s my creative response.

Grienke peered at the blue double duece printed on his foe’s jersey. He despised the person overlooking downtown LA. Of course, his enemy had no idea of his hate towards him. He though everything was “happy bunnies” because everything was more “quotey” than ever. He decided that the time was now. He moved closer to poor Clayton, and pushed him right out of the window if the hotel his team was staying at. That night, Grienke got the start, and pitched a no-hitter. No one suspects it was him, but why does anyone have to know?

Ok Mr. Mayfield, if you have a Bo, Barkley, or Frank Thomas card I’d be happy to take one off of your hands. I’m too predictable.

  32. Just finished cold mountain it is a great book that i strongly suggest to all of you (been reading it on and off for a while)

    That is all

  33. So, I was rereading the Princess Sarah Elizabeth Chronicles, and I developed a question: do I ever get to sing with the Mountain Brook Princes? They don’t come back after their attempt to falling love with Princess Sarah Elizabeth, and I was wondering if they ever meet me, or if I get to meet them.

  34. wow – that’s a great question – i’ve been so wrapped up with bipolar Tragedy Cub (new character) that i hadn’t thought of it – good thought detect:)

  35. Hooray!!
Meanwhile, I’ll be working on my novel(s) and seeing what else I can “detect” in Princess Sarah Elizabeth that might be wanted in the next book…
