Students took the Chemical Bonding Vocabulary Test (26 pts), worked on a worksheet that shows that they know how to read the Periodic Table and Elements properties, Element Code (38 pts) and had the polyatomic ion test (24 pts). They will have the Chemical Bonding Chapter Test on tomorrow.
Elements
Students were allowed to finish the Elements Study Guide and had the Elements Crossword Puzzle (40 pts) to review for the Vocabulary Test on tomorrow and chapter test on Friday.
Chemical Bonding
Students had a "Element Symbols" Test and completed the Chemical Bonding Chapter Review (68pts) in class. They will have a Polyatomic Ion Test (26 pts) on tomorrow as well as a Chemical Bonding Voc. Test. The Chapter test on Chemical Bonding will be Friday.
Elements
The final set of slides with the uses of elements and group characteristics were observed. We also discussed how electrons are involved in magnetism and how it affects bonding. The chemistry students will have a vocabulary test on Thursday and Chapter Test on Friday.
Chemical Bonding
Students began learning about covalent bonding. We discussed molecules, covalent bonding, polar & nonpolar molecules and covalent nomenclature. They observed a podcast on Covalent Nomenclature and had 2 WS's (Naming Covalent Compounds - 50 pts) & (Writing Covalent Formulas - 50 pts). They will have a test on naming and identifying polyatomic ions tomorrow and a vocabulary test on Chemical Bonding on Thursday. The Chemical Bonding Chapter Test will be on Friday.
Elements
We continued looking at Group Characteristics and elements uses after having a brief break due to the ACT Aspire on Friday. We went over uses for the groups 7A & 8A.
Chemical Bonding
Students began class by looking at a PopaPodcast on writing Ionic Formulas with Polyatomic Ions. Upon conclusion of the podcast, we worked 4 problems involving polyatomic ions on the board as a class. Then, we began work on the "Writing Ionic Formulas with Polyatomic Ions".(50 pts). We will be working on the Chemical Naming and writing formulas for ionic & covalent compounds this week.
ACT Aspire
Students took the ACT Aspire in class today. We will resume Chemical Bonding concepts on Monday.
Pharmacy
Today, we were able to listen to speakers from Samford University in Homewood, AL on careers involved in Pharmacy. Aaron Hux and Dr. Kim Benner presented information on a pharmacy career and Samford University to the Chemistry classes w/hopes of giving students a possible career path.
Chemical Bonding
Students took notes from the PowerPoint on Polyatomic Ions. They learned the names of given polyatomic ions, how to recognize them and how to name ionic compounds with Polyatomic Ions. We concluded class answering the compounds on a worksheet, "Naming Compounds Containing Polyatomic Ions" (50 pts). They were instructed to begin learning the names, symbols and charges of the polyatomic ions for a test next week. They will take the ACT Aspire Test on tomorrow.
