February 19 Announcements

Local company, Southern Post, is hosting it’s 2nd Annual “Winter Soiree” at Inverness Country Club February 23, 2019. Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)    

OMMS PTO is sponsoring a SOCK SALE, because life is too short for plain white socks! Order forms were delivered yesterday during advisory. Order form (copy attached) may be turned in to the front office or orders can be placed online at https://gofan.co/app/school/AL67656.  Sock size to shoe size from the manufacturer’s website: Youth size 7-9 fits shoe size Kid’s 10-Men’s 4/Ladies 5; Men’s size 10-13 fits shoe size Men’s 6-12/Ladies 7-13. Thank you for supporting OMMS PTO!

Changes in bus transportation will only be approved for emergency purposes.  Please send in transportation notes, including the reason for the change, 24 hours in advance.

8th graders interested in running for an SGA office at the high school should pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham. Applications are due by March 1st.

SGA dodgeball game will be March 5th. SGA members can pick up packets from one of the sponsors.

Cheer packets should be returned to Mrs. Bishop by Wednesday, February 20 at the latest. Students who do not turn in paperwork by Wednesday, February 20 will not be eligible for tryouts. No exceptions.

Art club will not meet on Wednesday February 20th. Wednesday’s art club class will meet the following day, Thursday February 21st.

No debate practice this week. Our next tournament is on Feb. 26th at Samford.

Rising 8th grade students that enjoy organizing and helping students and teachers might be interested in being a library aide; you do not have to love reading! If so, please indicate your choice on the course request form and come see Mrs. Howton or Mrs. Collins in the Library for an application!

8th Grade Students your High School Course request forms are needed and if you haven’t already turned yours in, it is over-due! If you have not turned your form in yet, please bring your completed form to the main office as-soon-as-possible!

Spring Book Fair will be here on Thursday! Students will attend with their ELA class. If parents or grandparents would like to set up an electronic wallet for students to use to purchase books, please visit http://www.scholastic.com/bf/oakmountainmiddleschool1 and scroll down to the ewallet section. Any unused funds will be credited back to the card used to set up the wallet!

State Scholars’ Bowl team will practice today after school to prepare for the State Tournament this Saturday at Hoover High School.

Students it is very important that you do not leave your belongings in the hallways. Sports bags, electronic devices, backpacks, etc. Please use your lockers or get permission from a sports coach to leave your bags in their classroom. Items should never be left in the hallway.

Art aide applications are available now to print from Mr. Cecil’s blog: https://podcasts.shelbyed.k12.al.us/acecil/?p=110&preview=true Anyone unable to print the form may contact Mr. Cecil for a copy. Applications are due on or before March 7th.

Support OMMS by washing your car at Blue Rain Car Wash. Tell the cashier you want to support the OMMS fundraiser. The code is “OMMS”. Proceeds from car washes and other services at Blue Rain Car Wash go to support OMMS. Sponsored by OMMS FBLA.

OMMS Yearbook sponsors need information for the play-up page for the yearbook. If you are an OMMS student who participates in a sport or group at OM High please contact Catherine Acton or Jane Graham as soon as possible. If no information is submitted to the sponsors your student and their group will be left out of the OMMS yearbook. Rising 8th grade students that enjoy organizing and helping students and teachers might be interested in being a library aide; you do not have to love reading! If so, please indicate your choice on the course request form and come see Mrs. Howton or Mrs. Collins in the Library for an application!

7th Grade Parents:  Please assist your student in the selection of their 8th grade elective class.  Students met with counselors for elective course offerings and know how to log on to the Counselor Google Classroom page  to access the form.  Elective course selection for the 2019-2020 school year is to be completed by tomorrow.

Oak Mountain Middle School is hosting a Battle of the Classes for the most Coupons for Classrooms book sales.  The grade that sells the most coupon books will win a slushy & game party.  Contest runs through today. (flyer attached)

7th Grade Scholar’s Bowl won the Shelby County Tournament with Cole S. as the top scorer for not only the school, but the whole tournament!

A message from OMHS Soccer:
Eagle Nation soccer season is upon us. The Varsity girls and boys will kick off their season tonight as we host Spain Park at 5 and 7pm. Students get in free with a current student ID. Please come out and fill the fence for a great start to the season.  Thank you for your help and support!

Track practice will begin on Tuesday (2/12) from 3 to 4:30 here at OMMS. The parent meeting will be after practice on Wednesday (2/13) at 5:00.

Information for Valentine’s Gala on February 8th, 2019

Valentine Gala tickets will be sold today at lunch. Admission tickets are $7.00 and fun tickets are $1 each. Fun tickets can be used for chicken nuggets (3 tickets), pizza (2 tickets), doughnut bar (3 tickets), hot chocolate (1 ticket), photo room (1 ticket per person) and concession items (1-3 tickets). Admission tickets at the door are $8. Attire for the gala is dressy, which means no t-shirts, shorts or jeans.

* Students may be dropped off at the front of the school at 6:45 P.M.

*  Attire is dressy. Students must be appropriately attired for admission.

*  Pick up –  Please take note and see the attachment for reference and to share with friends.  Parents will be required to park and pick up your student(s). Please remember to plan accordingly and park nearest your student’s departure point while exercising caution and patience in the parking lots.  Carpooling is encouraged!  

Pick up times/location:

*  6th grade – 9 p.m. at the front entrance of the building only.

*  7th grade – 9:30 p.m. at door #3 (B-west hall) – west side of building

*  8th grade – 10 p.m. – door #7 – Gym entrance

Physical forms have been returned to student-athletes who participated in Physical Day. Please follow the directions on the attached flier to create a DragonFly Max account, and upload your child’s physical to DragonFly Max. Indicate the sport(s) that your child will tryout for in the spring and/or will participate in for the 2019-2020 school year. You can go ahead and complete all of the requirements now, but please know that you will have to update the Concussion Form and Student-Release Form for the 2019-2020 school year once released by the AHSAA, which typically happens in July.

Valentine Gala tickets will be sold today at lunch. Admission tickets are $7.00 and fun tickets are $1 each. Fun tickets can be used for chicken nuggets (3 tickets), pizza (2 tickets), doughnut bar (3 tickets), hot chocolate (1 ticket), photo room (1 ticket per person) and concession items (1-3 tickets). Admission tickets at the door are $8. Attire for the gala is dressy, which means no t-shirts, shorts or jeans.

JUNA members will meet after school on Monday until 4:00pm.

8th graders interested in running for an SGA office at the high school should pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham. Applications are due by March 1st.

SGA dodgeball game has been moved to March 5th. SGA members can pick up packets from one of the sponsors.

Cheer packets should be returned to Mrs. Bishop by Wednesday, February 20 at the latest.

Unclaimed clothing, lots of it, can be found on the stage in the gym. Please come and claim your jackets, shorts, t-shirts, lunch boxes, and shoes.

Meeting for parents of new Dance Team members will be Tuesday, February 12th at 5pm in the Library. Parents can enter through door 4 (side entrance/C hall). Please bring physical paperwork, birth certificate, and NFHS Sportsmanship Certificate to the meeting so that we can add them to DragonFly incase they didn’t upload correctly the first time!

Eagle ambassadors are reminded of the bowling party Monday from 3:30-5:30 at Oak Mountain Lanes.

The 2019 Track and Field team has been posted on the GYM doors and on the Track & Field blog. Please be ready to start practice on Tuesday (2/12) from 3 to 4:30 here at OMMS. The parent meeting will be after practice on Wednesday (2/13) at 5:00. Congrats!!

February 7 Announcements

Oak Mountain Middle School is hosting a Battle of the Classes for the most Coupons for Classrooms book sales.  The grade that sells the most coupon books will win a slushy & game party.  Contest runs through the EXTENDED date of Monday, February 11th. (flyer attached)

Local company, Southern Post, is hosting it’s 2nd Annual “Winter Soiree” at Inverness Country Club February 23, 2019. Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)

Information for Valentine’s Gala on February 8th, 2019

Valentine Gala tickets on sale today and tomorrow at lunch. Admission tickets are $7.00 and fun tickets are $1 each. Physical forms have been returned to student-athletes who participated in Physical Day. Please follow the directions on the attached flier to create a DragonFly Max account, and upload your child’s physical to DragonFly Max. Indicate the sport(s) that your child will tryout for in the spring and/or will participate in for the 2019-2020 school year. You can go ahead and complete all of the requirements now, but please know that you will have to update the Concussion Form and Student-Release Form for the 2019-2020 school year once released by the AHSAA, which typically happens in July.

Congratulations to our 6th grade Scholars Bowl team for winning 1st place at the county tournament.

Golfers should meet Coach McGaughy at the gym concession stand today immediately after 6th hour.

8th grade Scholars’ Bowl will practice this Thursday after school to prepare for the county tournament that will be this Friday. They will be at the tournament all day this Friday and are responsible for all work missed that day.

Debate team will practice today.

Sweatpants orders should be sent home today. A limited supply is available if an exchange is needed. Please send in unworn pants with the order form and a note explaining what new size is needed. We will gladly exchange if we have the size available.

Cheer packets should be returned to Mrs. Bishop by Wednesday, February 20 at the latest.

FCA will meet tomorrow at 7:15 in the Sports Building.

Today, Zoe’s Kitchen will donate 25% of all proceeds from food sales to the family of Birmingham Police Sergeant Wytasha Carter. Sergeant Carter was killed in the line of duty while protecting and serving, and his family are members of our OM community. Participating locations include, Brook Highland, Patton Creek, Vestavia, Soho, Crestline, Summit, Trussville, and Downtown Birmingham. (flyer attached)

Washington DC Parent/Student Meeting will be tonight at 6:00pm in the OMMS Cafeteria. Please enter through door #7 (by the Gym).
