January 31 Announcements

Oak Mountain Middle School is Hosting a Battle of the Classes for the most Coupons for Classrooms Book Sales.  The grade that sells the Most Coupon Books will win a Slushy & Game Party.  Contest runs Wednesday, January 30th – Friday, February 8th. (flyer attached)

Local company, Southern Post, is hosting it’s 2nd Annual “Winter Soiree” at Inverness Country Club February 23, 2019. Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)

As Valentines Day approaches, let’s show the teachers some LOVE and help them restock their classroom during a Classroom Supply Drive starting Monday, January 28 and ending Monday, February 4.  We are asking that 6th graders send in a bottle(s) of hand sanitizer, 7th graders send in a box(es) of Kleenex, and 8th graders send in a roll(s) of paper towels.  Academic Partners will accumulate all the items, sort them, and distribute them to all classroom teachers (core and electives).  Please consider donating items and have them delivered to the front office by Monday, February 4. Thanks for supporting our teachers and showing them the LOVE!!!!

Parents of rising 9th graders, please plan to meet with the OMHS Counseling department on Monday, February 4th.  Morning session, at OMHS PAC, beginning at 9am, or evening session, at OMMS cafeteria, beginning at 6pm.     

SGA members should plan to meet Friday morning at 7:20am in Mr. Wood’s room (A-6).

Tuesday, February 5th-on this date, Zoe’s Kitchen will donate 25% of all proceeds from food sales to the family of Birmingham Police Sergeant Wytasha Carter. Sergeant Carter was killed in the line of duty while protecting and serving, and his family are members of our OM community. Participating locations include, Brook Highland, Patton Creek, Vestavia, Soho, Crestline, Summit, Trussville, and Downtown Birmingham. (flyer attached)

Yearbook photos-Science club members and Media Center aides will have yearbook photos taken today during advisory. Check in for attendance, and then report to the cafeteria.

8th grade basketball players should be dismissed to leave your classroom at 2:00 today.

8th grade Scholars’ Bowl will practice today after school to prepare for the county tournament.

Washington DC Parent/Student Meeting,Tuesday, February 5th,6:00pm,OMMS Cafeteria.  Please enter through Door #7 (by the Gym).
Physical Day physicals will be returned to student-athletes who participated during PE classes on Monday. Please follow the directions on the attached flier to create a DragonFly Max account, and upload your child’s physical to DragonFly Max. Indicate the sport(s) that your child will tryout for in the spring and/or will participate in for the 2019-2020 school year. You can go ahead and complete all of the requirements now, but please know that you will have to update the Concussion Form and Student-Release Form for the 2019-2020 school year once released by the AHSAA, which typically happens in July.

SPORTS NEWS GO EAGLES!!!!

Track and Field Tryouts will be February 5-7 from 3 to 4:30. It will be held here and we will meet at the track behind the school. Please make sure to complete the DragonFly MAX requirements and see the Track and Field Blog Track and Field Blog for any forms needed!

The 7th grade came back from down 10 last night to beat Homewood 45-39 in regulation. The 7th grade will host Mountain Brook at home tonight. Tip-off is at 5:15! We need everyone to come out and show your support!

The 8th graders came back from down ten late in the third quarter, and after a three by Matthew Heiberger to force the game into overtime the Eagle won 28-27. The 8th graders will play Mountain Brook tonight at 4:00 pm at Clay Chalkville MS.

Congratulations to Victoria N and Ben D who were selected to the Alabama All State Band, recognizing the top musicians in the state of Alabama.

As a part of Shelby County Schools’ Shelbycares mental health campaign, we want to emphasize the importance of physical activity and mental wellness during the too often cold, short days of February! Find a Balance…Invest in Yourself…Take a Walk/Run! OMMS SGA & our Physical Education Department will be participating in FITFebruary, and we’ll be coming up with some fitness tips and activities to share with our students throughout the month. If anyone would like to order a FITFebruary tshirt), please take your money to the office. Deadline has been extended until this Thursday at 8am for all orders. (flyer attached)

Show Choir news-due to a scoring error, Class Act actually received 2nd place in the Class A division at the Capital City Classic last weekend in Montgomery, instead of 3rd place. Congratulations!

Congratulations-to the combined 7th and 8th grade Scholars’ Bowl team that has advanced to the State Tournament! The tournament will be at Hoover High School on Saturday, February 23.

Baseball players-non basketball/non wrestling baseball players need to meet in Coach Burdett’s room immediately after school today. They do not need to dress out for practice.

Registration for the 2019 Oak Mountain Color Run is now open! Please help us reach our goal this year of raising $40,000 for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center! This run was started 6 years ago by two high school students at Oak Mountain High School to honor their grandparents who were impacted by cancer. The race is still hosted by the Oak Mountain High School Student Government Association. Please sign up for the 5k or 1 Mile Fun Run today! Classroom Supply Drive to support OMMS

January 24 Announcements

DEADLINE TOMORROW: GALA T-SHIRTS:  The Valentine’s Gala is coming up on February 8th. In addition to tickets and food, this year we will be offering a Gala t-shirt. Students may wear the purchased t-shirt to school on the day of the gala with sweatpants.  Dress for the gala is dressy (so not the t-shirt) with no t-shirts, jeans or shorts.  Attached you will find a pre-order form for t-shirts as well as other pre-sale items including a pre-sale package. T-shirts will ONLY be available through pre-sale. Orders will be taken Tuesday, January 22-Friday, January 25th. All pre-orders must be in the office no later than noon on Friday, January 25th with full payment.  There is a box in the front office for your student to drop of their pre-orders.  All pre-ordered items will be delivered to students during advisory on Wednesday, February 6 (so be sure to list your student’s advisory teacher in the space provided on the form).  Please see order form for additional information. Be on the lookout for information regarding volunteer opportunities in the coming weeks. Shirts are adult sizes.  (flyer attached)

Yearbook deadline-to reserve a copy of our yearbook is January 31st. Pay $40.00 now or half now and half in May. Be sure to check the list in the cafeteria before bringing a payment payable to OMMS with student’s name on payment. A limited supply may be available for purchase in May. We sold out last year.

OMMS Yearbook sponsors-need information for the play-up page for the yearbook. If you have an OMMS student who participates in a sport or group at OM High please contact Catherine Acton or Jane Graham as soon as possible. If no information is submitted to the sponsors your student and their group will be left out of the OMMS yearbook. Please make contact by March 1st.JGraham@shelbyed.org or CActon@shelbyed.org (Swim team, tennis, mtn. biking, soccer, visual arts, baton, etc.)

Valentine’s Gala-is coming up on February 8th. In addition to tickets and food, this year we will be offering a Gala t-shirt. Students may wear the purchased t-shirt to school on the day of the gala with sweatpants. Dress for the gala is dressy (so not the t-shirt) with no t-shirts, jeans or shorts. You should have received a pre-order form for t-shirts as well as other pre-sale items including a pre-sale package in your advisory class yesterday. T-shirts will ONLY be available through pre-sale. Orders will be taken today-Friday, January 25th. All pre-orders must be in the office no later than noon on Friday, January 25th with full payment. There will be a box in the front office to drop off forms. All pre-ordered items will be delivered to students during advisory on Wednesday, February 6 (so be sure to list your advisory teacher in the space provided on the form).

Algebra 1 math team-will not meet on Friday morning.

Honor Band news-congratulations to Leena D., Gabe W. and Victoria N. who were selected to participate in the Auburn Honor Band next weekend.

OMMS SGA & our Physical Education Department will be participating in FITFebruary, and we’ll be coming up with some fitness tips and activities to share with our students throughout the month. Good luck to our wrestling team tonight at their last duel against Hewitt Trussville at OMMS! Coach McGaughy invites all students to come, with free admission, as this will be a tough match and the team will need a home mat advantage. Only you guys can make that happen so come out and support the wrestling team tonight at 5:00! The team is now 36-3 on the season.

January 22 Announcements

Local company, Southern Post, is hosting it’s 2nd Annual “Winter Soiree” at Inverness Country Club February 23, 2019. Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)

7th grade Scholar’s Bowl-will practice today until 4:30pm in Ms. Meadows room (B-8),

Combined 7th and 8th grade District Scholar’ Bowl team-will practice today after school in Mr. Walker’s room until 4:30.

Debate team will also meet today in B-14 from 3-4pm.

Book Olympiad will not meet today.

Physical day-is tomorrow for students that have previously turned in a physical form. Make sure you have $20.00 cash or check, payable to OMMS. Forms cannot be turned in tomorrow. The deadline to turn in forms has passed.

Scoliosis screening letters-due today to the front office or health room. Students that do not return the letter will not be screened.

7th grade Scholar’s Bowl-will practice Tuesday until 4:30pm in Ms. Meadows room (B-8), please wear or bring your scholar’s bowl t-shirt for the yearbook photo.

Robotics team-swept the competition at the Blue Devil Robotics Competition yesterday. We placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Teamwork Challenge and 1st and 2nd in the Skills Award!
