February 13 Announcements

Dear Parents:

Our primary goal at Oak Mountain Middle School is to consistently examine ways to provide the best opportunities for our students. Parents and students please remember that we do not accept deliveries of gifts, candy, balloons, flowers, etc. for any reason, Valentine’s, birthdays, or any holidays.

Academic Partners will be meeting Thursday, Feb 14 at 8:15am.  We will be recapping the Valentines Gala and starting to plan for the school supply sale.  Please join us!!!

Local company, Southern Post, is hosting it’s 2nd Annual “Winter Soiree” at Inverness Country Club February 23, 2019. Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)    

OMMS PTO is sponsoring a SOCK SALE, because life is too short for plain white socks! Order forms were delivered yesterday during advisory. Order form ( copy attached) may be turned in to the front office or orders can be placed online at https://gofan.co/app/school/AL67656.  Thank you for supporting OMMS PTO!

Changes in bus transportation will only be approved for emergency purposes.  Please send in transportation notes, including the reason for the change, 24 hours in advance.

8th graders interested in running for an SGA office at the high school should pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham. Applications are due by March 1st.

SGA dodgeball game has been moved to March 5th. SGA members can pick up packets from one of the sponsors.

Cheer packets should be returned to Mrs. Bishop by Wednesday, February 20 at the latest.

Who’s Who photos will be taken on Thursday morning. Recipients will receive a pass and schedule on Wednesday. If you have a planned absence, please inform Mrs. Acton in C-20.

Art club will not meet on Wednesday February 20th. Because of this, Wednesday’s art club class will meet the following day, Thursday February 21st.

7th grade students remember to complete your Course Selection Form online this week in the Counselors Google Classroom? It is called the 8th grade course selection form. If you need help with it, please see Mrs. Butz, 8th grade counselor soon! Forms are to be completed by tomorrow!

OMMS Yearbook sponsors need information for the play-up page for the yearbook.  If you have an OMMS student who participates in a sport or group at OM High please contact Catherine Acton or Jane Graham as soon as possible.  If no information is submitted to the sponsors your student and their group will be left out of the OMMS yearbook.  Please make contact by March 1st.  JGraham@shelbyed.org or CActon@shelbyed.org  (Swim team, tennis, mtn. biking, soccer, visual arts, baton, etc.)

Winterguard photos are today. Please allow these students to leave 6th hour at 2:15pm to change and be ready for Belmont to begin at 2:30pm.

Track will practice today and the parent meeting will be after practice in the cafeteria!!

Golf practice is cancelled today.

Local company, Southern Post, is hosting it’s 2nd Annual “Winter Soiree” at Inverness Country Club February 23, 2019. Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)

Oak Mountain Middle School is hosting a Battle of the Classes for the most Coupons for Classrooms book sales.  The grade that sells the most coupon books will win a slushy & game party.  Contest runs through today. (flyer attached)

7th Grade Scholar’s Bowl won the Shelby County Tournament with Cole S. as the top scorer for not only the school, but the whole tournament!

SGA will meet Tuesday morning at 7:20am in A17.

Beginning today, PTO is having a sock sale! Order forms with more information will be given out during advisory today.

Eagle Nation soccer season is upon us. The Varsity girls and boys will kick off their season tonight as we host Spain Park at 5 and 7pm. Students get in free with a current student ID. Please come out and fill the fence for a great start to the season.  Thank you for your help and support!

Track practice will begin on Tuesday (2/12) from 3 to 4:30 here at OMMS. The parent meeting will be after practice on Wednesday (2/13) at 5:00.

Information for Valentine’s Gala on February 8th, 2019

Valentine Gala tickets will be sold today at lunch. Admission tickets are $7.00 and fun tickets are $1 each. Fun tickets can be used for chicken nuggets (3 tickets), pizza (2 tickets), doughnut bar (3 tickets), hot chocolate (1 ticket), photo room (1 ticket per person) and concession items (1-3 tickets). Admission tickets at the door are $8. Attire for the gala is dressy, which means no t-shirts, shorts or jeans.

* Students may be dropped off at the front of the school at 6:45 P.M.

*  Attire is dressy. Students must be appropriately attired for admission.

*  Pick up –  Please take note and see the attachment for reference and to share with friends.  Parents will be required to park and pick up your student(s). Please remember to plan accordingly and park nearest your student’s departure point while exercising caution and patience in the parking lots.  Carpooling is encouraged!  

Pick up times/location:

*  6th grade – 9 p.m. at the front entrance of the building only.

*  7th grade – 9:30 p.m. at door #3 (B-west hall) – west side of building

*  8th grade – 10 p.m. – door #7 – Gym entrance

Physical forms have been returned to student-athletes who participated in Physical Day. Please follow the directions on the attached flier to create a DragonFly Max account, and upload your child’s physical to DragonFly Max. Indicate the sport(s) that your child will tryout for in the spring and/or will participate in for the 2019-2020 school year. You can go ahead and complete all of the requirements now, but please know that you will have to update the Concussion Form and Student-Release Form for the 2019-2020 school year once released by the AHSAA, which typically happens in July.

Please bring physical paperwork, birth certificate, and NFHS Sportsmanship Certificate to the meeting so that we can add them to DragonFly incase they didn’t upload correctly the first time!

Congratulations to our 6th grade Scholars Bowl team for winning 1st place at the county tournament.

Golfers should meet Coach McGaughy at the gym concession stand today immediately after 6th hour.

8th grade Scholars’ Bowl will practice this Thursday after school to prepare for the county tournament that will be this Friday. They will be at the tournament all day this Friday and are responsible for all work missed that day.

Golfers should meet Coach McGaughy at the gym concession stand today and tomorrow immediately after 6th hour.

8th grade Scholars’ Bowl will practice this Thursday after school to prepare for the county tournament that will be this Friday. They will be at the tournament all day this Friday and are responsible for all work missed that day.

Debate team will practice on Thursday of this week.

8th graders interested in running for an SGA office at the high school should pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham. Applications are due by March 1st.

SGA dodgeball game has been moved to March 5th. SGA members can begin picking up packets today from one of the sponsors.

Sweatpants orders should be sent home today. A limited supply is available if an exchange is needed. Please send in unworn pants with the order form and a note explaining what new size is needed. We will gladly exchange if we have the size available.

FBLA members should meet with Mrs. Graham during advisory today. Check in with your teacher before coming to C5.

Cheer packets should be returned to Mrs. Bishop by Wednesday, February 20 at the latest.

FCA will meet tomorrow at 7:15 in the Sports Building.

Physical forms have been returned to student-athletes who participated in Physical Day. Please follow the directions on the attached flier to create a DragonFly Max account, and upload your child’s physical to DragonFly Max. Indicate the sport(s) that your child will tryout for in the spring and/or will participate in for the 2019-2020 school year. You can go ahead and complete all of the requirements now, but please know that you will have to update the Concussion Form and Student-Release Form for the 2019-2020 school year once released by the AHSAA, which typically happens in July.

Oak Mountain Middle School is Hosting a Battle of the Classes for the most Coupons for Classrooms Book Sales.  The grade that sells the most coupon books will win a slushy & game party.  Contest runs Wednesday, January 30th – Friday, February 8th. (flyer attached)

Enjoy a night out with the Oak Mountain Community and give back to your school at the same time.  100% of the proceeds go to Oak Mountain Middle Schools PTO.  The event begins at 6:30 and includes dinner by Chef Daniel Mitchell and live music by Chase Evan Wilson.  A full cash bar will be available for the night as well.  Visit www.SouthernPostAlabama.com to purchase tickets.  Last year was a huge success and we look forward to an even better year in 2019!  (flyer attached)

Today, Zoe’s Kitchen will donate 25% of all proceeds from food sales to the family of Birmingham Police Sergeant Wytasha Carter. Sergeant Carter was killed in the line of duty while protecting and serving, and his family are members of our OM community. Participating locations include, Brook Highland, Patton Creek, Vestavia, Soho, Crestline, Summit, Trussville, and Downtown Birmingham. (flyer attached)

Valentine Gala Information for Friday, February 8th

Information for Valentine’s Gala on February 8th, 2019
* Students may be dropped off at the front of the school at 6:45 P.M.

*  Attire is dressy. Students must be appropriately attired for admission.
*  Pick up –  Please take note and see the attachment for reference and to share with friends.  Parents will be required to park and pick up your student(s). Please remember to plan accordingly and park nearest your student’s departure point while exercising caution and patience in the parking lots.  Carpooling is encouraged!  
 
Pick up times/location:
*  6th grade – 9 p.m. at the front entrance of the building only.
 
*  7th grade – 9:30 p.m. at door #3 (B-west hall) – west side of building
 
*  8th grade – 10 p.m. – door #7 – Gym entrance

As Valentines Day approaches, let’s show the teachers some LOVE and help them restock their classroom during a Classroom Supply Drive starting Monday, January 28 and ending Monday, February 4.  We are asking that 6th graders send in a bottle(s) of hand sanitizer, 7th graders send in a box(es) of Kleenex, and 8th graders send in a roll(s) of paper towels.  Academic Partners will accumulate all the items, sort them, and distribute them to all classroom teachers (core and electives).  Please consider donating items and have them delivered to the front office by Monday, February 4. Thanks for supporting our teachers and showing them the LOVE!!!!

Sergeant Carter was killed in the line of duty while protecting and serving, and his family are members of our OM community. Congratulations to our 2019 FCCLA cookoff winners! Alana B (dairy dessert), Natalie G (beef), and Kat M (poultry). These students will represent OMMS at the Shelby County Cook-off at The University of Montevallo on February 22.

Congratulations to our JUNA team on a successful performance at the JUNA conference last week. Japan’s resolution passed in the General Assembly and Germany won the Judges Spirit Award!

SGA will meet at 7:20am Tuesday in Mrs. Higg’s room.
