October 28 Announcements

The annual canned food drive continues through tomorrow! Please be generous and bring as many nonperishable food items as possible. We usually collect over 2,000 items to donate to Manna Ministries and Oak Mountain Missions. The items that you donate will benefit families who are in need in our community. Each grade level advisory class will compete to collect the most items for their grade level and the winner will win a pizza party. Please leave prepackaged items together. OM Missions is in great need of peanut butter and jelly, because they include these items in each bag that is given to a family.  School total is 1,391- We need around 600 more cans to reach our goal. Please bring in your items tomorrow.

SGA will be selling Spooky Pops during lunch today through Thursday for $1 each.  Buy some for your friends, teachers, or even yourself.  Spooky Pops will be delivered during Advisory.

ALSDE has designated October as Dyslexia Awareness Month.  In response, Shelby County Schools is responding with an emphasis and focus on Dyslexia by providing information to administrators via email and having a Wear Red Day in observance.  There are approximately 20,000 students in Shelby County Schools.  Research shows that dyslexia affects 1 in 5 students.  That means as many as 4,000 students district wide would benefit from a dyslexia specific intervention.  We have made great strides as a state in supporting students with characteristics of dyslexia.  Shelby County currently offers Mindplay and SPIRE for students who have been identified with these characteristics.  I would encourage you to explore our Dyslexia Resources page on the District website.  Its an excellent resource for both teachers and parents.  https://www.shelbyed.k12.al.us/dyslexia.html  Wear Red for Dyslexia Day will be Tuesday, October 29th.  #ShelbyCo1in5
