February 18 Announcements

Front office and PE lost and found items will be donated this Friday, Feb. 21st.

If any 8th graders would like a Broadcast Application for OMHS, please stop by Ms. Salmon’s room (D4). Also if you have already picked one up, please return it to Ms. Salmon as soon as possible. 

Cheer tryout packets and payments are due February 28, 2020.

Any 8th Grader interested in running for a 9th grade SGA officer or representative position should plan to pick up an application in A17.  All applications are due by Friday, February 28th.

The SGA dodgeball game is Thursday after school until 4:00. Everyone is welcome to attend. Parents should pick up at 4:00pm. SGA members will stay until 4:15pm. 

The mandatory meeting for any student interested in trying out for the OMHS Color Guard, Dance Team, or Majorettes will be Thursday, February 27th at 6:00pm in the OMHS Band Room. Interested students need to attend with a parent. If you have any questions about trying out, please email ksheffield@shelbyed.org.

Auditions for show choir will be Friday, March 6. Please visit the choir website (www.ommschoir.com) for more information and to sign up for an audition time. Students may also talk to Mrs. Graddy if they have questions. 

Book Olympiad practices Tuesday/Thursday in C4 from 3-4 p.m. Parents pick up at door #4. 

Due to limited interest at this time, dance try-outs have been postponed to April 13-17.  Please see Mrs. Bishop with any questions.

Debate team practice will move to Wednesday this week. Please inform Mrs. Bolt if you will not be attending.

Congratulations to Robotics teams E and J who won the Teamwork Challenge award at the Bots on the Mountie Tournament this past weekend.  These teams now advance to the state tournament.

Mrs. Higginbotham’s 3rd period class will meet in the media center during PE today.

Registration for the Oak Mountain High School Color Run is now open at www.oakmountaincolorrun.com. The date is March 7 at Oak Mountain State Park. All proceeds will benefit the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. Help us pass the $100,000 mark raised by supporting and signing up this year!

There will be a meeting on Thursday, Feb 20th at 6pm for those interested in trying out for cheerleading at OMHS.  At least one parent must attend the meeting.  Please contact Bridgit Watkins (bwatkins@shelbyed.org) with any questions prior to the meeting.

Current OMMS 6th graders need to complete the Rising 7th Grade Course Request Form found on the Class of 2026 Google Classroom by Friday, February 14th. Students were given the code to join the Google Classroom in their science classes last week. If you have trouble accessing the form, please contact a counselor.


Academic Partners would like to invite you to their next meeting on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 8:15 a.m. at OMMS.  Please come join us as we begin planning for the registration prepackaged school supply sale.  We will be electing officers for the next school year at our April meeting.  If you are interested in being more involved and in possibly taking on a leadership role, please come see what we are about and learn about the opportunities that are available.

The Oak Mountain High School Girls Golf Team which includes FOUR Oak Mountain Middle School golfers is having a fundraiser this weekend. We will be serving at the Full Moon Bar-B-Que location in Pelham near the intersection of Hwy 31 and Hwy 119 at the following times: Friday (5-9), Saturday (5-9) and Sunday (11-3).  The team will be running food orders, refilling beverages, cleaning the tea area, trays and tables. They will be accepting donations to help support the Girls Golf program. Please come out and support our team. We look forward to seeing you all this weekend!

February 12 Announcements

Academic Partners would like to thank everyone who helped make the Mardi Gras Gala a success!!  We give a special thanks to Vintage Comfort Food Truck and Sylvia’s Creations and Catering for sponsoring our king cake walk.  Thank you to everyone that sent in candy.  Thanks to the volunteers who helped in the planning, made posters, ordered and picked up supplies, sold tickets during lunch, decorated before the event and worked the night of the event.  Thanks to the administrators, support staff and teachers who helped us in planning the event, setting up the cafeteria and hosting the evening. Thanks to the parents who encouraged their kids to attend and provided transportation. Not only are the galas some of our most successful fundraisers, but they are also a fun opportunity for our students to socialize and build memories.  We couldn’t host them without you – so thanks again to everyone who helped us make this gala a night to remember.

February 11 Announcements

All 6th graders will go to OMHS tomorrow morning to see the OMMS Show Choir shows.  Students will leave at appx. 8:15 and return at appx. 9:45-10:00.

This weekend the robotics team competed in the IQ Challenge at the Dome in Tuscaloosa.  Team C won the Excellence Award which is the top award at the tournament.  They will now advance to the State Robotics Tournament!  Team members are Julius L, Nathaniel H, Thomas S, Gage C, and Rachel C.  Way to go!!

Congratulations to our 7th and 8th grade Scholars’ Bowl teams in the Shelby County Tournament last Friday.  7th grade team won 2nd place and the 8th grade team won 1st.  Abby S. won 1st individual for 7th grade and Eliza B. won 3rd individual for 8th grade,

Registration for the Oak Mountain High School Color Run is now open at www.oakmountaincolorrun.com. The date is March 7 at Oak Mountain State Park. All proceeds will benefit the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. Help us pass the $100,000 mark raised by supporting and signing up this year!

There will be a meeting on Thursday, Feb 20th at 6pm for those interested in trying out for cheerleading at OMHS.  At least one parent must attend the meeting.  Please contact Bridgit Watkins (bwatkins@shelbyed.org) with any questions prior to the meeting.

6th grade Math team practice for February 13th is cancelled.  Please make plans to have your student transported home. Mrs. Alaimo will post practice on Google Classroom for the students to work on in the meantime and will see everyone at practice on February 20th!  Also, please wear your math team shirt to this practice as we will need to take a team picture for the yearbook.

The Oak Mountain Athletic Boosters invites all parents to an Athletic Preview evening. This will be the parents chance to meet all the coaches at the middle school and discuss things such as tryout information, expectations from coaches, the season and gain overall information about any athletic event your child might be interested in.  The event will be tonight, February 10th in the cafeteria from 6-7pm.  Please plan on attending.

February 7 Announcements

If you are interested in joining the Robotics Club that will meet after school on Monday’s until 4:00, please complete the Google form.  https://forms.gle/yZ2iYsKWJz5p4chK7  

If any 8th graders would like to sign up for Intro to Television Production, please see Ms. Salmon for an application.  On Wednesday, Feb. 12th, Mr. Milton will be coming to speak with the 8th grade class about the Television Production class at OMHS during Advisory. 8th grade teachers please plan to walk your students down to the cafeteria, Mr. Milton would like to speak with them and show them what it is all about.

Make plans to attend the Mardi Gras gala on Friday Feb 7.  Admission tickets and fun tickets will be sold during lunch today as well as at the door tonight.  Admission tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.  Fun tickets are $1 each and can be used for pizza, crazy bread, chick-fil-a, doughnuts, drinks, candy, the cake walk, and the selfie station.  Avoid the lines and get your tickets early during lunch.  We hope to see you at the event – it will be a night of fun and excitement.  Attire for the gala is dressy, no jeans or shorts.   There have been questions about the “dressy” attire for the gala.  Please refer to the following:  No jeans, tshirts, shorts or sweatshirts.  Girls can wear dresses or nice pants. Boys don’t have to wear a tie, but at least a button up shirt or golf style shirt.  Sweaters are also appropriate.  There will be a purse and coat check in.  Gala pick up instructions are attached.

6th and 7th graders that are interested in trying out for dance need to return their paperwork by next Friday, February 14th.

SGA dodgeball packets due by next Friday.  The dodgeball game will be Thursday, February 20th immediately following dismissal.

SGA will be selling candy grams next week Tuesday-Friday for $1.00 each. 

On Monday, February 10th, all 7th and 8th graders will go to OMHS to see the Show Choir shows.  Students will leave OMMS at 8:15am and return by 11:15am

Mardi Gras Gala – Academic Partners is excited to host the Mardi Gras Gala on Friday, 2/7 from 7-10 pm.  Admission tickets and fun tickets will be for sale at school on 2/6, and 2/7 during lunch as well as at the event.  Admission tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.  Fun Tickets (these will be used for all activities and food) are $1 each.  FOOD and ACTIVITIES:  Chick-Fil-A nuggets 3 tickets, Pepperoni or Cheese Pizza 2 tickets, Crazy Bread 3 tickets, Krispy Kreme donuts 2 tickets, Cake Walk 1 ticket, Selfie Station 1 ticket, and the concession stand will be open with 1-3 tickets for various beverages and candy.  Dressy attire, no jeans or shorts.
