October 9 Announcements

Our Fall book fair will be held through October 15th. Students will attend with their ELA classes. If parents or other family and friends would like to purchase a digital gift card for a student please visit https://www.giftfly.com/shop/follett-book-fairs#select-gift-card. Gift cards can be texted or emailed to personal email addresses;  student shelbyed.org addresses will not be accepted. Thank you for your support of our library fundraiser.

There are only a few spots left on the Washington DC trip! Debate team practice for 10/10 is cancelled.

Our annual OMMS Canned Food Drive, sponsored by Phase I is coming up. We will collect from advisories from Tuesday, Oct. 22-29th. The grade level that collects the most items will win a pizza party. We will collect nonperishable items that have not expired. We donate the items to Manna Ministries and Oak Mountain Missions to benefit people who are in need in our area.

Any Phase I members that are available on Thursday morning before school, please report to A-19.

Botvin/LEAD will begin tomorrow during Advisory.  Students please make sure you know the correct location for your Botvin/LEAD class.  6th hour (1st period) will end at 2:20 p.m. and 7th period (Botvin/LEAD) will begin at 2:25 p.m.

OMMS PTO is looking for businesses to sponsor our school!  For $250, your company logo will be featured on the OMMS Life Facebook page (which has over 900 followers!) all year long and your company information will be distributed in a school-wide list serve email.  Our partnership allows for extremely targeted advertising to almost 1,100 students and their families!  Please turn in the attached form and your donation to the front office to show your support of OMMS students and teachers!

OMMS Parenting Day 2019 will be on Friday October 18th. Parents are invited to come to any or all activities. 10 – 11:15AM OMMS Media Center –  Muffins and Coffee with Compact 2020 Officers  Officers from Compact 2020  will present  on Vaping and Social Media. After this parents are invited to drop in on their student’s 4th and/or 5th period class. Parents are then invited to stay for lunch with their child.

In order for a student-athlete to go through evaluations, try-outs, or begin practice with any sports team, the student-athlete must be 100% complete on DragonFly Max (instructions attached)

Make plans to come out to the Battle for the Mountain Faculty Flag Football Game on Tuesday, October 15th at OMMS.   OMMS Faculty vs OMHS Faculty.  Food Trucks (Hollywood Grill, City Bowls and Steel City pops) start at 6pm and game starts at 7pm.  Admission is $3.  Who will be crowned King of the Mountain?

Wrestling sign-up sheets are posted on B-, C-, and D-Halls. Everyone interested in wrestling should sign up on one of the posted sheets. Wrestling practice begins Oct. 23. Student-athletes will have two days to try wrestling before committing to the team. Parent meeting is Thursday, Oct. 24 in the cafeteria at 6:00. See Coach McGaughy if you have any questions.  All information including eligibility paperwork, schedules and fees are provided on the wrestling webpage https://podcasts.shelbyed.k12.al.us/omms-wrestling/ Anyone intending to join the wrestling team should report to the cafeteria for a meeting on Tuesday, October 15th.

OMMS softball tryouts for the 2019-2020 team will be held October 23rd and 24th from 3-5:30. Students who are interested must sign up with Coach Brown (Room C-10) in order to participate in tryouts. Students must have updated physical and all required information submitted on Dragonfly. If you have any questions contact Coach Brown (hbrown@shelbyed.org).

Tennis tryouts will be held at Inverness Racquet Club on Monday October 21st for boys and Tuesday October 22nd for girls.  In order to participate you need to sign up with this Google form https://forms.gle/v3pwkdJQYomA4fm18  and complete all of your eligibility paperwork on dragonflymax.com.  Only those who have completed 100% of their eligibility paperwork will be able to tryout.  If you have any questions you can stop by Mr. Richardson’s room D-8.

Oak Mountain Girls Basketball League is now open.  Registration for girls in the 2nd-6th grades is now open through our web site www.omgb.org or by paper copy.  Please email Coach Noel if you need a form or have any questions at jnoel@shelbyed.org  Early registration cost:  $100; after October 30th cost is $125.  Evaluation/Placement Date: October 30, 2019 at OMMS 7:00-8:00pm 2nd-4th graders; 8:00-9:00pm 5th-6th graders.   Practices will begin November 5th, mainly held on Tuesdays.  Our first game will be Saturday, December 7th. 

Oak Mountain Middle School baseball tryouts for the 2019-2020 team will be held October 18th, 20th, 26th and 27th. Students who are interested must sign up with Coach Renfro (Room A-18) in order to participate in tryouts. Students must have updated physical and all required information submitted on Dragonfly. If you have any questions contact Coach Renfro (j2renfro@shelbyed.org). Tryout Schedule: Friday, October 18th (3:45-6:00) and Sunday, October 20th (1:30-4:30). A preliminary cut will be made after the first 2 tryout dates. The final round of tryouts will be Saturday, October 26th (9:00-12:00) and Sunday, October 27th (1:30-4:30).  All tryouts will be held at Oak Mountain High School.
