Monday, January 5, 2015:

  1.  ACT Prep: Idioms—Page 1266 in lit book
  2. Discuss essential questions that are printed on their January calendars.
  3. Have students draw from a box. Find out who “wins” the prize.  Have that person sit in the middle of the classroom and give them a prize.
  4. Do a Predictogram for “The Lottery”
  5. Read/listen to “The Lottery” (I have 20 copies, so students need to look on with a partner.)

Tuesday, January 6, 2015:

  1. ACT Prep:  The Hyphen
  2. Video of “The Lottery”
  3. Questions given out to students regarding “The Lottery”
  4. Students form groups to answer questions
  5. Discussion/answer the questions as a class  (Standard 15. (RI. 11-12.6)  Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text in which the rhetoric is particularly effective, analyzing how style and content contribute to the power, persuasiveness, or beauty of the text.)  Students will identify the point of view in “The Lottery” and analyze the way in which the work is effective for the reader.
  6. PowerPoint on Shirley Jackson and “The Lottery”
  7. Discuss: Irony/Morality (Standard 10. (RI. 11-12.7) Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matter uncertain.)
  8. ***Also discuss allusions to “The Lottery”—The Simpsons’ “Dog of Death” alludes to it.
  9.  Use Draw Inferences Sheet back at desk.

1. Act Prep: Grammar and Usage

2. Test on Of Mice and Men and table of contents. Multiple Choice. Last gold grade of the 9 weeks.

3. Using butcher-board paper, connect the dots, so to speak. Using all the novels, speeches, short stories, and poems that we have read this semester, connect them to the essential questions that you will have to write about on the exam as well as to anything else they have in common. Do this in groups of three or four. Feel free to illustrate as you review and draw lines to connect the text names. We will continue to work on this on Monday (Dead Day) and will also discuss other items on your review sheet.
