Friday: Prog Reports

Today schoolwide progress reports went out.  Please ask your student if you can see it.  I am still entering more grades and I don’t consider their grade accurate until I am done over the weekend.   Please check STI Monday for an updated English grade.  I will also send home an updated progress report. Please sign it when you see it and I will give a HW grade for it being turned back in signed.

Thursday: Essays and Vocab

Today in class we are looking at copies of essays that were written by students in my classes. I wanted everyone to see some great examples of introductions, transition words, basic organization, and conclusions.  Then I handed out essay topic ideas that went wtih the last four short stories.  The only homework they have tonight is to come up with three sentences that represent the three body paragraphs of their chosen topic. I will take these up tomorrow.

We finally started working in our vocabulary books today, after weeks of anticipation. 🙂  Students took the vocabulary diagnostic test and we discussed literal vs. figurative meanings, and connotation vs. denotation.

Test Taken Today

Today, the students had a 35 question multiple choice test on the last four short stories that we read.  I already have 2nd and 3rd period’s tests in STI, as well as many of their folder check grades.  I’m attempting to get in as many grades as possible for the schoolwide progress report that goes out on Friday.  However, I plan to print out new progress reports next week for just  my class that will need to get signed and returned.

Folder Check 2 was also turned in today. Worth 100 points.  So far, they are looking really good.

If you were absent, please do the following in Writer’s Choice:

Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010

sakiWe read Saki’s short story  “The Interlopers” in class today. If you are at home sick, please read it either in your literature book or here.  If you are an auditory learner, listen to the short story here. Write short answers to the questions on page 85 1-8 please. That is your homework.  Also—do the two worksheets I gave you on vocabulary practice for “Scarlet Ibis” and “Interlopers”. Put in folder as numbers 6 and 7.

The Carpathian Mountains is the setting for the story. See photos of the place.

Since we have been talking about bullying, revenge, and characters who hold grudges against others, read the following poem:

“A Poison Tree”
William Blake

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I water’d it in fears,
Night and morning with my tears;
And I sunnéd it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright;
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole,
When the night had veil’d the pole:
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretch’d beneath the tree.

Parents…

titlephotoTonight on STI it says that they have questions on “The Interlopers” to answer.  Because of a shortened bell schedule today, we did not read the story in class as I had planned, so I do not want them doing the questions tonight. No homework tonight.

PS: Today in Advisor/Advisee, we had a great discussion about BULLYING.

Please leave a comment if you are reading this blog!!! Thank you!!! (Students and parents alike!)
