Audio of “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” & Other Fun Stuff

The Outcasts of Poker Flat

Okay, this is hilarious.

Deep.

Pick one of the following writing topics and write as much as you can on the topic you chose. Write at least one page.

1. Why do you think Harte has chosen this particular story–The Illiad to be shared? Think about  the events of the Trojan War.

2. What is the symbolism of the snowstorm?

3. What part does sacrifice play in the tale?

4. The gambler, Mr. Oakhurst, is described at the end as “he who was at once the strongest and yet the weakest of the outcasts….” Do you agree with this view? In what ways does Oakhurst typify a romantic picture of the Western hero?

5.Who is the most admirable character in the story?

6. Write an essay explaining the importance Tom Simson and Piney Woods as catalysts who bring out the best in John Oakhurst, Mother Shipton, and the Duchess.

7. Read the story carefully. Then identify the passage suggesting that Uncle Billy is plotting against his fellow outcasts. Would you describe him as malicious or mischievous?

8. Apparently, Tom Simson makes it back to Poker Flat and summons help. Do you believe the citizens of Poker Flat look less harshly on the outcasts after hearing their story from Tom and finding the bodies, along with Oakhurst’s epitaph?

9. Why did John Oakhurst choose the two of clubs to bear his epitaph?

10. If you had to affix blame for the deaths of the stranded outcasts, would you point your finger at Uncle Billy, the committee of Poker Flat citizens, bad luck, or the outcasts themselves?

Don’t do the TIMED WRITING after all (was on the board last Thursday and Friday). I don’t think anyone did this part, but if you did, we can use it for extra credit so it’s not “for nothing.”

101 Persuasive Essay and Speech Topics

Your essay is due next week (see calendar) and it should be typed, font TNR 12, double spaced, no “I” or “me”

Using I or me is fine, but let’s not use contractions.  I do not need an outline or a rough draft for this essay.  (Time constraints.)

You need to quote three sources that strengthen your arguments. (One source quoted/cited in each body paragraph.)
You will need a Work Cited page that shows who these sources are.

Meet in the upstairs computer lab to begin typing your persuasive essay.

Update for Creative Writing

dc64db689a1e932375ac4a338dab7b44We will do one chapter every two weeks instead of every week.  I think this will give everyone more time to work on character development, setting, and plot.  Please be working on your writing when you get the chance  and print it out to bring to class.  You can send yours to me via jculver@shelbyed.k12.al.us  or via jculver@shelbyed.org

Information to help: Examples of showing versus telling

With this schedule, this is how it should work: Friday, Feb. 13: Chapter 1 due, TYPED, double spaced, 12 TNR, stapled and turned in Monday, Feb. 16: NO SCHOOL, PRESIDENT’s DAY Tuesday, Feb. 17: Workshopping in class Wednesday, Feb. 18: IN COMPUTER LAB TYPING Thursday, Feb. 19: IN COMPUTER LAB TYPING Friday, Feb. 20:  WORKSHOP your CHAPTER 2 so far

A story’s plot is what happens in the story and the order it happens in.

For there to be story, something has to move, to change. Something goes from point A to point B.

This change could be:

A physical event (Point A = psycho killer is picking off everyone in town. Point B = police arrest the killer).

A decision (Point A = character wants to practice law like his father. Point B = character decides to be a ballet dancer).

A change in a relationship (Point A = They hate each other. Point B = They fall in love)

A change in a person (Point A = character is a selfish jerk. Point B = character has learned to be less of a selfish jerk.)

A change in the reader’s understanding of a situation. (Point A = character appears to be a murderer. Point B = The reader realizes that character is actually innocent and made a false confession.)

This change could even be the realization that nothing will ever change. (Point A = your character dreams of escaping her small town. Point B = her dream escape is shown to be a  hopeless one.)

What is plot? It’s the road map that takes your story from point A to point B.
