A Wreath for Emmett Till

Today second period, third period, fourth period, and fifth period read A coverWreath for Emmett Till in class. Two classes even got to read it outside under the pine trees–until Mrs. Culver’s allergies got the better of her…We discussed the combination of history, English, art, and current events that the book wove together.  Not quite an uplifting story, but a reminder from the past that we should never allow something like that to happen again.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”–George Santayana

The Excitin’ Works Cited…

Okay, maybe not. But it IS something you need to know in order to do well on all your high school and college research papers.

Some of you were talking about the different ways you can do your citations online/online citation generators.  I had mixed feelings about these—they seem like too much of a shortcut, but hey…you are getting the job done and citing your sources.  Here are the sites I found:

Easybib

Citation Machine

BibMe

KnightCite

Now…we discussed how to write your Works Cited page today.  Here is the site I was talking about in class—the MLA/OWL at Purdue page.

Here is a sample Works Cited Page. books

Have fun working on this tonight. Rough draft of your Works Cited page due tomorrow.

Whew!

writereadYour hand hurt yet?  Parents, today I let the students work on their original poems for their portfolio project OR they could work on writing their five paragraph essays (TP CASTT poetry analysis OR commentary on one of their prose examples).  Please ask them about their portfolio and have them show you what they have so far.  The due date for the final project is May 5 and it is worth 400 points.  All month we have been working on it a little bit at a time.

Tomorrow we will meet in the computer lab, room 107, so bring items that you need to type.

Links on how to write your own poetry:

Write an Acrostic

Write a Limerick

Write a Haiku

Write a Diamond Poem

Write a Concrete Poem

PS: Anyone want to donate some tissue for the classroom? It’s hard to keep them in stock with all the allergy sufferers in the room! I would really appreciate it!!!

TP-CASTTing a Poem

big-smileOne way to analyze a poem is to TP-CASTT it.  In class today and yesterday, we analyzed Rita Dove’s “Grape Sherbet” as an entire class.  Here is my “Prezi” presentation on it.

Tomorrow, please bring your rough draft of your TP-CASTT poetry analysis (on one of your chosen poems).

Over the weekend…

Easter 2009 010You are to find two songs that fit the theme of your portfolio project.  Write down the titles/artists and the lyrics (or print off) on the sheet that I gave you today (Friday).  Have your parents approve the lyrics please.

You guys did a great job this week, researching and  finding two poems that fit your theme! Next week we will be analyzing one of your poems, making sure you have at least one prose example and writing a commentary on it.  On Friday, we will be in the computer lab typing these up.

Have a good weekend and Happy Easter!

Monday Monday…

eecummingstypewriterHalf of my classes went to the library today to find out details about the AVL, how to access it, etc.  I also showed them some books that had been pulled on all types of poetry.  You need to find 2 poems about your topic by Thursday and 1 piece of prose writing (essay, short story, magazine or newspaper article).  Let me know if you are having any trouble!

Don’t forget how useful this link is!!!

Preface to Portfolio Project

Today we discussed the next five poems in Blue Lipstick and filled out the accompanying worksheet.  After that, we discussed writing the 200 word minimum preface to your project.  When writing it, think about why you chose your topic? What interests you about it? You can use personal pronouns like “I” in this piece of writing.  Have a rough draft ready to show Mrs. Culver on Monday.

Concrete Poems

bluelipSo today we started reading some of the poems from Blue Lipstick.  Hopefully you got a good idea of what concrete poems are all about. Your classwork (and continued homework) is to write your own concrete poem about the topic you chose for your project.  Here’s a “concrete poem maker” I found.  Here is another one (a little basic).
