Shelby County Education Association Scholarships

Each year the SCEA presents $1000 scholarships in two categories: student and member.  The student scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of SCEA members.  The member scholarship is awarded to an SCEA member who is furthering his or her career by seeking an advanced college degree in an education-related field.

Attached are the applications for these two scholarships.  All guidelines must be followed correctly for the application to be accepted.  The completed packet of materials must be received by Monday, March 14, 2022, at 3:30 pm.  No electronic applications are accepted.

These scholarships are only for active members of the Shelby County Education Association.  (Support personnel should contact Kenneth Dukes and/or Sharon Martin.) Please let Erica Davis, at Vincent Middle High School, know if you have any questions.

The Jim Harrell Poetry Prize for entering first-year students at the University of Montevallo

This vibrant program has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to student poets since its establishment more than a decade ago.  Through the generosity of James N. Harrell, we can offer a $2000 scholarship for the contest-winning poem, and a $1000 scholarship for second place.  We established the contest and the scholarships expressly with entering freshmen in mind, as an encouragement to pursue poetry at the college level.  And we know that both the recognition and the funding can make a huge difference in getting the good start at college that every entering student needs.
