Lucretia Owen moved to Columbiana when she was a young girl and graduated Shelby County High School in 1956. The daughter of B.L. & Loma Owen, Lucretia enjoyed school and a variety of activities – Yearbook, Glee Club, Band, 4-H, Student Council, Homecoming Queen, camping, and fishing. She went on to attend Auburn University and was one of the first in her family to finish college, earning a teaching degree. She married her Auburn sweetheart, Donald May, and they set out on life’s great adventures.
Lucretia worked diligently throughout her life, making the most of every dime, actively cherishing her family & friends, faithfully supporting her church, and demonstrating how to give back to her community. She touched many lives. In her continued desire to “pay it forward,” Lucretia directed this scholarship be given to a Shelby County High School graduate. Her desire was to lessen the financial hardships in attending college for a hometown student that showed the aptitude to attend and the desire to make a difference.
