Black History Fact: MLK improvised the most iconic part of his “I Have a Dream” speech. This fact may be the most surprising you’ll find here. When King was originally drafting his speech, the “dream” language was considered but ultimately edited out. He was only allotted five minutes to speak, and he didn’t think he’d have enough time to fit those words. When he handed the speech into the press, the words “I have a dream” were not included. 

• Today is the last day to turn in donations for our Kid’s Heart Challenge.  We are asking for students to try to raise $5 or more for the American Heart Association to attend the Hoops for Heart Celebration.  Boys see Coach Horton and girls see Coach Jett with any questions or donations.
• Yearbooks are on sale for $30

Black History Fact:  Eminent Scientist: George Washington Carver developed 300 derivative products from peanuts among them cheese, milk, coffee, flour, ink, dyes, plastics, wood stains, soap, linoleum, medicinal oils and cosmetics.

Black History Fact:  Rosa Parks is known for breaking Montgomery, Ala.’s segregation laws by refusing to concede or give up her bus seat for which she was arrested. Some reports of the famous incident claim that Parks only did this because she was “tired” — but Parks herself clarified, “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” as per the Smithsonian. Parks was a legendary civil rights activist.

Black History Fact:  Benjamin Banneker taught himself astronomy and math to become America’s “First Known African American Man of Science. His significant accomplishments include the successful prediction of a solar eclipse, publishing his own almanac, and the surveying of Washington, D.C.

Black History Fact:  Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, Dr. Crumpler moved to Richmond, Virginia to provide medical care for the freed slaves who would otherwise have no one else to turn to. She dedicated herself to the understanding of diseases that particularly afflicted women and children, and when she eventually returned to Massachusetts, she opened her own clinic in Boston. She saw poverty stricken patients and treated them regardless of their ability to pay her

• Black History Fact:  Gladys Mae West was born October 27, 1930. She is an American mathematician known for her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of the Earth, and her work on the development of the satellite geodesy models that were eventually incorporated into the creation of the Global Positioning System, which is most commonly called, GPS.

• Black History Fact: Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. He was the youngest of five children.  His mother Millie raised him by herself alone and his three brothers and one sister. Growing up, Jackie loved to play sports.  After high school, he played college football for UCLA, was drafted into World War II, and played baseball for the Kansas City Monarchs, which was part of the Negro Baseball Colorguard tryouts for the high school band will be February 17th-24th. If you are interested in joining please see Mr. Hodges in the band room
