  • Heritage Fact of the Day-When watching your next series, think fondly of Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena, a Mexican engineer that invented color TV. He developed the system in the 30s and applied for the patent in 1940. Camarena also invented a simplified color system that was used by NASA in 1979 to take pictures and videos of Jupiter.

Hispanic Heritage Month Fact: Dolores Huerta found her voice while serving as an organizer for the Stockton Community Service Organization. It was during this time that she met a fellow organizer, Cesar Chavez. The two bonded, and in 1962, they formed the National Farm Workers Association. Throughout her long career, Huerta has advocated for workers’ rights, women’s rights, and Latinx rights, and continues to do so to this day, at age 91. Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan was taken from Huerta’s words from NFWA strikes: “Sí se puede,” which translates to “Yes we can.”

McGrew- Hispanic Heritage Month Fact:Cesar Chavez is best known for his efforts to gain better working conditions for the thousands of workers who labored on farms for low wages and under severe conditions. Chavez and his United Farm Workers union battled California grape growers by holding nonviolent protests.

McGrew- Hispanic Heritage Month Fact: Daddy Yankee, known as the “King of ReggaetĂłn”, is a famous singer from Puerto Rico. His hit single with Luis Fonsi “Despacito” became the first Spanish song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video is the most watched video in YouTube history with over a billion views. The song was also made into a remix with Justin Bieber.

McGrew- Hispanic Heritage Month Fact:A Bronx native of Puerto Rican descent, Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic American to serve as a member of the Supreme Court. President Barack Obama picked her as his first nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009.

McGrew- Hispanic Heritage Month Fact:Lionel Messi is a famous soccer player from Argentina who plays as a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and captains the Argentina national team. Until leaving the club in 2021, he had spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, where he won a club-record 35 trophies. He has scored over 700 goals in his career.

  • We want to wish the football team well on their game this evening against West Blocton. 
  • Congratulations to both vb teams for a successful season ending last night at Columbiana.  The 7th grade team remained UNDEFEATED  – way to go girls!  Although the 8th grade lost a heartbreaking tie-breaker, according to Coach Jett – In terms of skills, knowledge, effort, attitude and behavior this was the best team she ever coached (and that’s a lot of teams)! 

Rosemary Hernandez remained a PERFECT server for the season with 22 out of 22.  Zoe Jones led the 8th grade with 12 out of 14 serves and 7 KILLS.

Hispanic Heritage Month Fact:
Franklin R. Chang CourtDiaz born in 1950 in San José, Costa Rica became the first Hispanic astronaut when NASA selected him in 1980. He logged more than 1,500 hours in space, including 19 hours during spacewalks. Ellen Ochao was the first Hispanic American woman astronaut to go to space. She spent nearly 1,000 hours in space during four Shuttle missions. There are 10 other Hispanic astronauts who have traveled to space.

Way to go Volleyball girls for defeating West Minster yesterday.  Both teams did a phenomenal job winning 2 exciting matches.  Blakely Baggett led the 8th grade with a perfect 13/13 serves in a 2 out of 3 tie-breaker.  Rosemery Hernandez served a PERFECT 19/19 for the 7th graders.  Both teams finish their seasons today at Columbiana.  Good luck girls!!!
