*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that Carter G Woodson is known as the Father of African American History? He collected information on famous African Americans and he advocated for time to be set aside for the celebration of African Americans in 1926 which was the precursor to African American history month.

*Congratulations to Ariel Suarez who placed high enough at the SuperSectional for the North in wrestling to qualify for the state competition this weekend.

*Congratulations to the student of the week:  Peter Jackson. He was nominated by Ms. Lewis.  He demonstrated the character traits of service and compassion by donating extra money to the school on a fundraising event.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that the first African American woman inventor to get a patent was Sarah Goode?  She invented a fold up bed that when placed up against the wall created a folding desk.  The patent for her invention was in 1885.

The cost will be $5.00.  You must have a ride home at 5pm if you plan on staying after school.  Wait in your 7th period classes until you are called to the cafeteria by Mrs. Lewis.  If you are not staying for the dance and ride a late bus, you will stay in the gym for tomorrow only.

He was born a slave but was freed after the Civil War.  He went on to head the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama as an institution of higher education for black people in the late 1800’s.

*COTS and all other MMS Teams & Organizations such as Peer Helpers, Scholar’s Bowl Teams, Math Teams, Diamond Dolls, BETA, Archery, Tennis, Wrestling, etc will have pictures taken for the yearbook on Monday, Feb 8th in the morning.  Don’t be absent if you want to be in the pictures.  Ambassadors please wear your shirts for your picture.

Congratulations to the 7th and 8th Grade Scholar’s Bowl Teams.  The 7th grade took 1st place in the County Competition.  Team Members included: Will Landers, Janie Gray, Ella Alexander, Emmanuel Hernandez, Rebeca Emilano, and Jazmine Williams.  Will Landers also won 2nd place in the individual competition.  The 8th grade team placed 2nd overall at the competition.  Team members included: Grayson Fulmer, Evan Zou, Miranda Martin, and Dylan Snider.  Grayson Fulmer won 2nd place in the individual competition.  Way to go Bulldogs!

Progress reports will be sent home today. If your child is failing, please contact the school to set up a parent conference.

  • There will be an informational night at Montevallo High School for all 8th graders and their parents on Tuesday, February 9th at 6pm in the Performing Arts Center at the high school. Topics discussed will include high school graduation requirements, course selection, and you will hear from the 9th grade teachers about expectations for next year.

 

  • We are now starting to sell the Coupon Books for $20.00.  Your child will receive a permission slip to sell them with their progress report today.   You can currently buy one from any Beta Club member.  The sale lasts until February 17th.  This is a fundraiser for the school.

 

  • On Thursday, February 11th, we will be having a Mardis Gras themed Dance from 3-5 pm. The cost will be $5.00.  Parents please pick up your child on time.

 

  • There will be a mandatory parent meeting on February 12th at 6 PM in the PAC at the High School for any 8th grade girl interested in high school cheerleading next year.  You will pick up your tryout packets that night.

 

  • On Monday, February 8, the Teen Center will open. It is located at the Scout Lodge next to Parnell library.  The Teen Center will be open from 3 to 7 each school day and as wanted, later on Friday nights.  The fee to join is $25 per year and for just $1 youths can get a 2-week trial membership.  Beginning March 1, a free snack and evening meal will also be provided.  A completed application including parent/guardian signature must be on file before the first day of attendance.  Youth can come and participate in a wide variety of activities or just hang out, playing ping pong, Frisbee and/or video games including Wii, PS 4, X-box-One.   Opportunities for community service, healthy life style and leadership activities, as well as national competitions in a variety of areas including millions of dollars in college scholarships are available for members.  For more information, call 665-4466.

  • Any 8th grader interested in trying out for color guard, dance line, or majorette as part of the 2016 Montevallo Marching Troubadours needs to see Mr. Lawley to receive an informational packet.  There is a mandatory parent meeting about tryouts on Thursday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Montevallo High School band room.

*Congratulations to the JUNA Team who won a trophy at the recent Mock Junior United Nations Assembly. The team represented the country of India and won recognition for their resolution.  Team members included Grayson Fulmer, Miranda Martin, Sarah Lowery, Will Landers, Janie Gray, Ella Alexander, and Kayce Sankey.  The sponsor was Mrs. Guraya.

*Congratulations to the MMS wrestling team who has had a great season this year.  At the last meet this past weekend; MMS took 4th place out of 12 teams.  Medals were awarded to Jemari Harris, Ariel Suarez, Wilson Massey, and Hunter Bass.
