MHS News 3/25/2015

*PROM tickets are on sale before school AND during lunch . This will be the LAST WEEK to pur-chase tickets at the reduced price of $40.
*The Academic Decathlonwill be all day Friday . Sign up in the lunchroom to participate today & to-morrow. It’s $3 to participate in Athletics, $3 to participate in Academics or $5 to do both. If you plan to just watch, it will be $2 to enter each location. Athletics will be in the gym and Academic events will be in the PAC.
*Senior FEA members, please see Mrs. Cabrera about your graduation stole.
*Juniors and Seniors: If you wish to participate in the CO-OP program next school year, you should have your applications and required documentation submitted to Ms. Allen by TOMORROW
*Attention 9th & 10th grade girls: The Shelby County College & Career Center is partnering with Ala-bama Power to offer Girls Can Camp this summer! Girls Can is a hands-on camp featuring interior design, drafting, welding, carpentry, and other construction specialties. Only 15 campers are accepted each year so see Ms. Allen as soon as possible for your application. The deadline is April 30.

*Montevallo’s Got Talent! The Shelby County Poetry Players and the MHS Theatre Arts Classes are sponsoring Montevallo’s Got Talent, a show featuring the most talented singers, musi-cians, and dancers at our school. Bring $3 on Thursday because this is a show you do not want to miss. Tickets go on sale during 5th period lunch on Thursday; show time begins 7th pe-riod. Prizes will be awarded to top performers. Come help decide who will win with your round of applause!
*Reminder: the Shelby County Poetry Players will have a photo shoot immediately after school on Wednesday. Bring your Poetry Player shirts

*AP Science & Math Students: Mandatory mock AP exams for Biology and Chemistry will take place on TODAY in Rooms 109 & 110. This hall will be closed to other students and testers will be called shortly after morning
announcements. The AP Calculus mock exam will take place on tomorrow. The test location is still pending.
*We now have short sleeve MHS t-shirts on sale for $3.00. Please come by the main office to purchase.

*The Academic Decathlon, a fundraiser sponsored by The National Honor Society, will be all day Friday, March 27th , the day we get out for Spring Break. All money raised will go toward finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Sign up in the lunchroom to participate Monday – Wednesday.. It’s $3 to participate in Athletics, $3 to participate in Academics or $5 to do both. Support your class by competing and helping to find a cure for CF. If you plan to just watch, it will be $2 to enter each location. Athletics will be in the gym and Academic events will be in the PAC. Let’s make this a healthy, fun, competition between grades while raising money for a good cause! Bring your money and sign-up today, tomorrow or Wednesday in the lunchroom!
*Congratulations to Bobby Anderson for making 2nd Team All State and 3rd Team All County. He averaged 15 points per game, 14 rebounds per game, and 4 blocks per game
to Antwain Cunningham for making 2nd team All-County. He averaged 18 points per game and 6 assist.

**If you ever find yourself in a tough situation and need help right away, look for the yellow Safe Place sign and tell an employee at the location you need help. Within minutes, a volunteer or staff member from Family Connections will be there to meet you. If you’re strug-gling and need immediate help– Safe Place locations are there for you.

**Have you ever seen the yellow Safe Place signs around town and wonder that they mean? Safe Place signs indicate that a community business or location is willing and able to help a young person in need. Many teens deal with troubling issues like abuse, neglect, bul-lying, and family conflicts. Make sure you know where thee Safe Places are in Birmingham, Hoover, and Shelby County so the next time you or a friend needs help, you know just where to go.

*Prospective AP Students: Remember that you must submit a signed AP Contract along with your course request form if you wish to be enrolled in any AP course for 2015-2016.
*Students: A representative from the Marine Corps will be in the cafeteria during lunch waves TODAY . Be sure to stop by and ask about the ROTC scholarships that are currently available to students.
*Juniors who picked up an application for Boys and Girls State – the essay appli-cation is due next Friday March 20th. Please submit essays to Ms. Allen by this time.
*Come support the MHS cheerleaders on March 17th from 5-9pm At Buck’s Pizza in Alabaster.
*There will be an SGA meeting in Mrs. Pastor’s room today during 7th period to review Career Conference Evaluations. All members are expected to attend.
*Next Monday March 16th, students involved in the Citizenship-Leadership Group will meet in the library for an important event and activity. Key issues affecting the school will be discussed and participation by all members of the group is required and necessary for a successful and productive meeting. If you are a member of this group, make plans to attend. Again, the meeting will be this upcoming Monday in the library beginning at 8:00 AM.
*There will be a football meeting at the beginning of 7th period for those who signed up.

This Wednesday March 11th will be our annual Career Conference at MHS! SGA has been busy scheduling speakers from all kinds of careers as well as 12 different colleges to come and speak with us. You will be able to select the areas in which you are interested during your 1st period class tomorrow morning. Don’t miss it!

*Seniors: The March edition of the Senior Newsletter is now available. This is the last newsletter for 2015, and it contains important dates, announcements, and scholarships for the next couple of months. Be sure to pick up a copy or download from Ms. Allen’s blog.
*ACT Prep Make up Session is TOMORROW March 5th from 6 – 9.
*If you missed the first session, please go by Mrs. Hipps’ Classroom to pick up your materials. If you want to sign up for the class, see Mrs. Hipps ASAP.
Seniors:
This summer, the ALSAMP Summer Bridge program will be held at UAB. Minority students who have been accepted to UAB and plan to major in a STEM field can apply. In-terested students should see Ms. Allen.
*Do you have a talent you’d like to share with your friends here at good old MHS? Audition for the talent show with Mrs. Howard and show us what you got. The show will be Thursday, March 26 but auditions will be next Tuesday and Thursday, March 10 and 12. Auditions will NOT be during class time or any other day. Sign up outside Mrs. Howard’s room ASAP to reserve your audition spot.
*Come out and support the soccer teams on Tuesday March 10th at McAllister’s Deli in Pelham. The girls team plays at Pelham that night, you could enjoy the game and then head to McAllister’s for dinner! The team will receive a portion of all the profit earned.
*Congratulations to the band students for earning ALL Superior ratings at today’s Music Performance Assessment at Homewood High School. In addition, the students earned a letter grade of ‘A’ in every category, from each judge, thereby earning them a special des-ignation of Superior ratings with Distinction. This is the first time we’ve earned Distinc-tion honors!
*Support the Arc of Shelby County by wearing sweatpants tomorrow for $2.00. Students who pay will receive a bracelet.
