MHS News 10/30/2017

Scholars’ Bowl Try-out test will be given Thursday See Mrs. Glover anytime during school or right after to take the test.

The volleyball team has “Volley For A Cure” t-shirts available to support Breast Cancer Awareness on sale for $15. Come by the main office or see any volleyball player to purchase.

The UM Upward Bound program applications are due to Ms. Allen by Wednesday.

Teachers & Students: This week, MHS will be participating in the Alabama College Application Campaign. Tomorrow will be “Rep Your College” day and participating seniors will get help submitting college applications.

Attention Sophomores: The Shelby County Career Awareness Fair is set for Tues., Nov. 7. Students who do not wish to attend, should submit your opt-out form to Ms. Allen this week.

Scoliosis screening for all 9th graders will be given on Nov. 9. Screenings are conducted by Jeff State Nursing students.

Pep club shirts are in. If anyone would like to purchase a shirt for $10 or become a member of the Pep Club please see Coach D.

Attention AP Students: If you have not submitted your required AP Contract, please submit to Ms. Allen asap!

Congratulations to Trudie Benson, Clay Colley, and Jackson Burns for being selected to participate in Youth Leadership Shelby County for 2017-2018!

Attention Seniors Participating in the AL College Application Campaign: You should have appointment cards indicating your scheduled time to report to the lab on Tuesday. Your appointment card will be your pass out of class. See Ms. Allen today if you did not get one.

“Tickets for the Pumpkin Decorating Contest are on sale during lunch. It’s $5 for an individual entry and $9 for a group of up to three students. The prize pool is now up to $100 in gift cards.”

Attention Students: The UM Upward Bound program is excited to offer a new math & science program designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students through mentoring, tutoring, and exposure to STEM careers. Upward Bound is offering fall enrollment for low-income or first-generation college students in grades 9-12 with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Applicants should also have an interest in pursuing a STEM career path. See Ms. Allen for an application. The deadline is Nov. 1.

Future Teacher meeting Tuesday night at 6:30 in the cafeteria. Bring your own dinner.

School make-up pictures will be Oct. 23. “The soccer team would like to invite all students to participate in a Pumpkin Decoration Contest starting next week during GPS classes. A $5 entry fee for individuals will get you a pumpkin to decorate and a shot at winning over $75 in gift cards to local restaurants plus a Halloween goody bag. Entry tickets will be available during lunch . See the flyers posted around the school for more info.”

*On Friday, varsity football plays the Gordo Green Wave at home. Show your school spirit Friday and let’s “Turn the Green Wave Blue!” Wear blue Friday for a “blue out.”

*It’s time to get started with Battle of the Books! This year there are multiple ways to compete! Not only could you answer questions about the 4 books, but you can create a book trailer, illustrate a book jacket, or write and perform your own skit/monologue about one of the books. March 16th will be the competition date when we’ll get to visit with the author, have a book chat cafe’, and food trucks! See Mrs. Glover Wednesday during your GPS time to find out more

*Congratulations to Varsity Volleyball Team for going 5-0 in the Purple Tiger Invitational Tournament at Minor and bringing home 1st place. All-Tournament selection to Jordan Stephens and MVP Georgia Hughes
*There will be a meeting in Mrs. Pastor’s room during each grade level’s GPS today for any students interested in joining the Model United Nations Team. MHS won awards last year at the conference, and we expect to do the same this year!

*Attention seniors: If you would still like to order senior portraits, the representative from Bill Miller will be here TOMORROW at 7:30 am in the cafeteria. This is the last time he will be on campus to take orders. After this date, you will have to call or mail in your order.

Oct. 5, 2017 NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS FRIDAY & MONDAY!

The Montevallo Middle School football team will be having a fundraiser TONIGHT at Moes in Alabaster from 5-9. After purchasing your meal please place receipts in the basket at the register to help raise money for the team.

School make-up pictures will be Oct. 23.

Congratulations to Hannah Sommers, our Troubadour of the Week! Hannah is a senior danceline member who is a veteran member of the Troubadours. Hannah always has a smile on her face and gives her all in every rehearsal. She maintains an attitude of positivity and kindness in every situation. She treats her peers with respect and is always lifting up others. Thanks for all you do, Hannah! Troubadour Pride!”

The PSAT will be administered Wed, Oct. 11. Students who signed up should report to school on time, and you are allowed to bring a calculator. Cell phones or other electronic devices are prohibited.

Parents: Flu vaccines for students will be given Oct. 20. You child has been given a permission form to receive the vaccine for free. Please sign and return to the school nurse by Oct. 13.

Students: Do you need help mastering the ACT? If so, the University of Montevallo has ACT Prep Camps scheduled for Oct. 14 and Nov. 18. Check out Ms. Allen’s blog for cost and registration info.

The 8th Annual National Chess Day Scholastic will be held on Saturday, October 14th. Come to Brookwood Village and compete against some of the best chess students ! Trophies will be awarded for 1st -3rd place; medals 4th-6th place. See Mrs. Hinton for registration details.

If you have done any community service hours since May, be sure to turn your time in to Mrs. Glover. You can turn in any service hours from May to September. Get a head start on your Give Me Five hours! If you complete 20 hours, you’ll earn a t-shirt. Get out and serve your community, help a neighbor and gain experiences!

Juniors and Seniors: A representative from Huntingdon College will be on campus, Thurs., Oct. 12 during the senior GPS time. Sign up in the Guidance Office.

Attention Seniors: Do you need help completing your FAFSA? If so, you can get it on Oct. 17 during your Gov’t/Econ class. Interested students should sign up with Mrs. Pastor and find what you’ll need to bring.

If you brought your completed permission form and your $3 to play, please bring both to Mrs. Pastor Room 305 in the Alice Boyd building by lunchtime. If you’ve already paid and turned in your permission forms, then go to the gym when called this afternoon. Only $1 to watch! Tickets to watch will be on sale during lunch.

“Congratulations to the Marching Troubadours on their performance at the Midsouth Marching Festival this weekend. They were awarded Best In Class 1A band and received superior ratings with an excellent rating in color guard. Way to show your Troubadour pride!”
