Snapshot Quiz on Percent Proportions tomorrow, Friday 2-27-2015!!!!!!

We spent the little time we had in class today working over the homework from Tuesday night. I did not take it for a grade (a big Thank You to those who were diligent & got it completed!), but instead we worked through many of the problems to reinforce proper procedure. We will finish up this same worksheet tomorrow & then take our quick quiz! Be on the lookout for some extra credit as well!

Percent Word Problems HW for 2-24-2015

Tuesday, February 24th

I know the students LOVE these snow days, but missing days of instruction makes for playing days of catch-up in math!

We are wrapping up our unit on The Percent Proportion! We reviewed Monday night’s homework and worked specific items students had questions about to clarify their thinking. One more night of percent proportions, embedded within word problems, should finish us up!

Be careful on tonight’s homework! Remember: YOU have to determine the “IS” and the “OF” !

Monday, February 23rd

We are continuing to work on calculating the Percent Proportion during our math class! As a sixth grade student, this is a hard concept to grasp but fortunately, we have several days to work on this skill. I found a terrific video from the Internet that helps explain the Percent Equation method. I think this will help both students & parents as they work on homework this evening.

The Percent Proportion

Your student also has a foldable that demonstrates two ways of calculating this proportion glued into their math notebooks. I have included a screen shot of our work together in class that reflects the foldable that’s glued into their notebook (just in case they don’t bring their notebook home!) We refer to this as the “IS/OF” formula.

Wednesday, February 17th

Students continued practicing their skills with calculating the percent of a whole number. Today’s focus was finding the percent when it’s embedded in a word problem. Students worked with me as we determined necessary components from the word problem. We also discussed multiple ways to approach & solve these word problems! Items #1-3 were worked together with each class with #4, 5, 6 left for them to finish independently, yes, for homework!

Problem Solving Prac Percent of a Number HW 2-18-2015

Tuesday, February 17th

Students were introduced to a new skill last Friday just to give them an idea of our focus of study for this week. Finding a Percent of a Whole Number is our skill for the next few days. We reviewed the steps on calculating percentages during class and worked several examples. Here are our procedures:

Step 1: Convert the % to a decimal (use the Dr. Pepper method)

Step 2:  Multiply the decimal by the whole number (remember to move your decimal in your answer the proper number of places!)

Tuesday, February 10th

Continuing with our Measurement Unit, students need to cement their understanding of standards units of measure. To this end, students were given a Measurement worksheet for homework tonight. The standard units can be found on a chart we have been working with in class over the last several days. Or standards units can also be found on the internet. All this to prepare for a Pop Quiz on these measurements in class on Wednesday!
